Best Perplexity Alternatives in 2026: 7 AI Answer Engines Compared on Citations, Price and Privacy

阅读约 7 分钟发布于 更新于

Kagi is the closest Perplexity alternative for paying users: cited answers from about 30 models, a Research mode, no ads and no training on your searches, from $5 a month. Ask Brave is the best free pick, with deep research and no account; Google AI Mode suits everyday questions, and ChatGPT search suits people already in ChatGPT.

利益关系说明

None of these seven products is made by the team behind GenGrades, and none paid to be listed. They are ranked on what someone leaving Perplexity needs: what independent tests show about citations, free limits, price, privacy and research modes; every fact links to its source.

Kagi is a paid, ad-free search engine with an AI layer: end a query with a question mark for a cited Quick Answer, or open Kagi Assistant to chat over Kagi's own results with a choice of about 30 models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others. It is the closest match to what Perplexity Pro sells, a multi-model answer engine with a Research mode, and it is paid for by subscribers rather than ads.

    最便宜的付费方案

    $5 a month (Starter, 300 searches)

Professional, $10, has unlimited searches; Research mode and the flagship models need Ultimate at $25. Prices are before sales tax, and yearly billing is 10% off.

    Training and history

Not used to train AI; Assistant chats delete after 24 hours by default

You can keep chats for 7 or 30 days or permanently; Kagi says the model providers do not train on your data either.

    来源:help.kagi.com核对于

    优点

    • Pick the model for each chat from about 30, with Kagi's own search results as the grounding.
    • No ads, no training on your data, and Assistant chats that delete themselves after a day.
    • Months you do not use Kagi are credited to your next bill.

    要注意

    • No free plan, only a 100-search trial.
    • Research mode and the top models need Ultimate at $25 a month, more than Perplexity Pro's $20.
    • AI use is capped by a dollar-value allowance; when it runs out, AI pauses until the next billing cycle.

  4. 4. ChatGPT search

People already in ChatGPT who want sourced answers and writing help in one chat

ChatGPT search is the web search built into ChatGPT: when a question needs fresh facts, ChatGPT searches and answers with clickable citations and a Sources panel. It works on every plan and even without an account on chatgpt.com, but it is a feature of a general assistant, and in independent news tests its citations were worse than Perplexity's.

    • Ads on Free and Go.
    • No published search or 2026 deep-research limits; you only see a counter in the app.

操作步骤

每一步只做一件事。

  1. Name the job you used Perplexity for

Quick answers with links point to Ask Brave or Google AI Mode; a choice of models and a research mode to Kagi; papers and studies to Consensus; searching in several languages to Felo; writing and files in the same chat to ChatGPT.

  2. Try the free tier with your own questions

Ask Brave and Google AI Mode are free, Kagi has a 100-search trial and Consensus gives 3 Deep Searches a month. Ask each the same five questions you last asked Perplexity and compare the sources, not the wording.

  3. Switch off training before you search

In ChatGPT turn off model improvement under Data Controls, and in Google check the Search history setting. If you keep Perplexity, turn off AI Data Retention in its preferences.

  4. Open the citations

Click two or three links in each answer and check that the page says what the answer claims. CJR found tools citing syndicated copies, wrong dates and broken links.

  5. Cancel last

Keep Perplexity until the new tool has handled a normal week of your searches, then cancel it, so you are never without an answer engine you trust.

How we ranked these Perplexity alternatives

Each pick is a product people use instead of Perplexity for the same job: ask a question, get an answer built from live sources, with links to check. They are ranked on what someone leaving Perplexity needs: what independent tests show about citations, how fresh and wide the sources are, what the free plan really gives, the price of the plan that matches Perplexity Pro, what happens to your searches, and whether there is a deep research mode. Every price, limit and policy here was read on October 25, 2026 and links to where it was read.

Kagi is first because it is the closest like-for-like replacement for Perplexity Pro, a multi-model answer engine with a Research mode, and it has the strongest privacy terms here. Brave Search is second as the best free option with no account. Google AI Mode and ChatGPT search are the biggest names, but neither lets you pick other makers' models, both carry ads or ad tests, and the only independent tests that include ChatGPT search found its citations worse than Perplexity's.

What changed at Perplexity in 2026

Perplexity is still a capable answer engine. In the two largest independent news-citation tests of 2025 it made fewer errors than ChatGPT search and Google's Gemini app. People leave it for other reasons:

  • Limits. The free plan now gives 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month, Perplexity's help centre says; older guides say 5. Pro and Max have weekly limits with no numbers published, and Pro subscribers on Reddit complained in May 2026 of hitting them after a handful of queries, Android Authority reported. Perplexity said accounts tied to promotional codes got different limits.
  • Price. Pro is $20 a month and Max $200. Perplexity's own plans page blocks automated readers, so the Pro price is from Android Authority's report.
  • Your data. On Free, Pro and Max, your searches can train Perplexity's models by default until you switch off AI Data Retention, and switching it off does not cover data already collected. Perplexity did halt its ads, the Financial Times reported in February 2026.
  • Lawsuits. AI Lawsuit Tracker lists about ten active suits from publishers and platforms, including The New York Times (December 2025) and CNN (May 2026). Reddit's scraping case mostly survived the motions to dismiss on July 31, 2026.

Which kind of answer engine you need

The tools here do the same job in different ways, and the right one depends on what you used Perplexity for.

  • A dedicated answer engine with a choice of models (Kagi, Felo) is the closest to Perplexity Pro: you pick the model per chat and pay a subscription. Kagi charges for search itself and keeps no ads; Felo is cheaper per month and stronger across languages.
  • A free AI layer on a full search engine (Ask Brave, Google AI Mode) gives cited answers with no subscription. Brave keeps chats private and short-lived; Google has the widest data for local and shopping questions but runs on your Google history.
  • An assistant with search built in (ChatGPT search) suits people who want to keep writing, analysing files or running deep research in the same chat.
  • An academic answer engine (Consensus) replaces Perplexity's academic searches: answers come only from papers, with each claim linked to its sentence.
  • A search API for developers (Brave's Search API, Exa, Perplexity's own API) is a different product: it feeds your own app, and is not ranked here.

What independent tests show

Four independent studies have compared Perplexity with other consumer answer tools, and all four tested 2025 versions:

  • Columbia Journalism Review's Tow Center (March 6, 2025) ran 1,600 queries across eight tools: each got an excerpt from a news article and had to name its headline, publisher, date and link. Free Perplexity was wrong on 37%, the best result; ChatGPT search was wrong on 134 of 200 (67%) and Grok 3 on 94%. Paid versions answered more prompts correctly but were also confidently wrong more often than their free versions.
  • The EBU and BBC (October 21, 2025) had journalists from 22 public broadcasters rate more than 3,000 answers from the free versions of four assistants, collected in May and June 2025. Answers with at least one significant issue: Gemini 76%, Copilot 37%, ChatGPT 36%, Perplexity 30%. The Gemini figure is for the Gemini app, not Google AI Mode.
  • DeepTRACE (arXiv, September 2025), queried in August 2025, checked whether each statement was backed by the sources the tool itself listed. In search mode, citation accuracy was 68.3% for You.com, 65.8% for Bing Copilot, 49.0% for Perplexity and 39.8% for GPT-4.5; in deep-research mode GPT-5 deep research reached 79.1% and Perplexity 58.0%.
  • The "Synthetic Sources?" audit (arXiv, May 2026, accepted at AIES 2026) ran 712 real queries and checked cited pages for AI-written text. Share of cited pages flagged as AI-generated: Copilot 27.8%, Gemini 14.7%, Perplexity 9.4%, ChatGPT 7.3%. ChatGPT cited 14.68 sources per answer and Perplexity 7.92.

No independent test has yet included Google AI Mode, Kagi, Ask Brave, Felo, iAsk or Consensus. The rankings that do include them are run by their makers: in Brave's June 2026 rerun, judged by AI models on queries Brave has not published, Ask Brave came first and Perplexity last; Kagi reports 95.5% on SimpleQA for its Research assistant from its own August 2025 run. The Artificial Analysis Search Index is independent but tests developer APIs under one shared model: on October 19, 2026 Exa and Perplexity's API scored 80 and Brave's 75.

做得不好

做得不好

  • Every independent accuracy test is from 2025.

证据: CJR tested in early 2025, EBU/BBC collected answers in May and June 2025 and DeepTRACE queried in August 2025; the models behind all seven picks have changed since.

  • Most of these tools publish no usage numbers.

证据: Perplexity Pro and Max, ChatGPT search, Google AI Mode and Ask Brave give no search counts; Kagi and Felo do.

  • Several prices come from third parties.

证据: Perplexity, OpenAI, Consensus and iAsk did not show readable plan prices on October 25, 2026; those prices carry the outlet that reported them.

尚不确定

尚不确定

  • Whether Google AI Mode, Kagi, Ask Brave, Felo, iAsk or Consensus cite more accurately than Perplexity.

原因: No independent test has included them; the only comparisons that do are run by their makers.

  • Whether Google still shows ads inside AI Mode answers.

原因: Google announced a US test in May 2025, but its ads help pages now describe in-answer ads only for AI Overviews.

常见问题

先给结论,再讲原因、例子、限制和下一步。

What is the best Perplexity alternative?

Kagi is the closest Perplexity alternative if you pay for Perplexity: cited answers from about 30 models, a Research mode, no ads and no training on your searches, from $5 a month and $25 for Research. For a free option, Brave Search's Ask Brave gives cited answers and deep research with no account.

Is there a free Perplexity alternative?

Several good Perplexity alternatives are free. Ask Brave gives free cited answers and deep research with no account, Google AI Mode is free inside Google Search, and ChatGPT search works free, even signed out on chatgpt.com. Felo and iAsk also have free plans; Kagi only has a 100-search trial.

Is ChatGPT search better than Perplexity?

Not on citations, according to independent tests from 2025. Columbia Journalism Review found ChatGPT search wrong on 67% of news-citation queries against 37% for free Perplexity, and the EBU/BBC study found a significant issue in 36% of ChatGPT answers against 30% for Perplexity. ChatGPT is stronger as an assistant around the search: writing, files and deep research in one chat.

Is Google AI Mode a good Perplexity alternative?

For free everyday, local and shopping questions, yes: it runs many Google searches per question and links its sources. It uses only Google's Gemini models, feeds your searches into Google's AI by default, and has no published accuracy figure or independent test.

Which Perplexity alternative is best for research papers?

Consensus is the best fit for papers: it answers only from peer-reviewed research, links each claim to the exact sentence in the paper and shows how studies split on yes-or-no questions. Kagi's Assistant also has an Academic lens that limits searches to scholarly sources.

Which AI search engine does not train on my searches?

Kagi and Consensus say they do not use your data to train AI, and Brave says Ask Brave questions are not used for training. ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity use consumer searches to improve their models unless you change a setting.
