Best Character AI Alternatives in 2026: 6 Apps to Move To as Character.AI Faces a Sale

6 min readPublished Updated

JanitorAI is the closest free Character AI alternative for adults: unlimited free chats and a huge library of user-made characters. Talkie suits people who want voice calls and rules as strict as Character.AI's, Emochi has a big anime and romance library with a free plan, and Chai suits phone users who will pay for unlimited messages.

Disclosure

None of these apps is made by the team behind GenGrades, and none paid to be listed. They are ranked on what someone leaving Character.AI needs: user-made characters, free limits, memory, content rules and age checks, what happens to your chats, and each company's record. Apps built around adult content are named separately and not ranked.

The picks, in order

JanitorAI is a website and app where adults make, share and chat with user-made characters for roleplay and interactive fiction. Its own model is free with no message cap, and you can plug in another model with your own API key or, on Janitor+, pay per token through its router. Bots are tagged Limited or Limitless, and only Limitless bots allow sexual or romantic themes.

    Cheapest paid option

    About $12.99 a month (Janitor+)

Reported by RoboRhythms; Janitor's own pricing page did not load for our reader. Janitor+ adds five times more context, priority replies and monthly swipes with its best models.

    Free option

Unlimited chats on Janitor's own model

Janitor's help centre says a free option will always remain.

    Minimum age

    18

Users suspected to be under 18 are banned for good. Australia, Brazil and the UK also require a k-ID age check.

    Sexual content

    Allowed on bots tagged Limitless

Limited bots exclude sexual and romantic content; anything involving minors is banned outright.

    Memory

About 8,000 to 9,000 tokens free; five times more on Janitor+

Janitor suggests keeping a short memory field by hand for long roleplays.

    Chat export

    No built-in export

RoboRhythms suggests emailing Janitor's support for a copy of your personal data.

    Source: roborhythms.comchecked

    Good

    • Unlimited free chats on Janitor's own model, the only app here that promises that.
    • A very large library of user-made characters, with personas, a memory field and editable prompts.
    • Bring your own model with an API key, or pay per token for outside models on Janitor+.

    Watch out for

    • Free memory is short, about 8,000 to 9,000 tokens, so long roleplays need the memory field kept by hand.
    • No built-in export of chats or characters.
    • Peak-hour queues: on October 19, 2026 a waiting room kept visitors out for up to three hours, RoboRhythms reported.

Skip it if: you are under 18, want voice calls, or need a way to take your chats with you.

JanitorAI's guide to chat memory: its free model reads about 8,000 to 9,000 tokens at once, so older details drop out of long chats.

  2. 2. Talkie

Voice calls with characters, under rules as strict as Character.AI's
Talkie's FAQ: its characters run on MiniMax's AI, and pornographic and violent content is banned under its terms.

    Source: talkie-ai.comchecked

Talkie is a character chat app built by MiniMax, with company-made and user-made characters you can talk to by text or by voice. Its rules ban sexual content and even sexual undertones, which makes it the nearest match to Character.AI's own rules. You can chat as a guest on the website in many regions, and the app is on iPhone (as Talkie Lab), Android and the web.

    Cheapest paid option

    $9.99 a month (Talkie+)

Reported by RoboRhythms; Talkie sells plans in the app stores and publishes no price page. Talkie+ removes ads and adds unlimited active characters and 10-minute voice calls.

16 in countries including Germany and Brazil, 15 in countries including France and Denmark.

    Talkie publishes no context size.

    Source: talkie-ai.comchecked

    Chat export

    Account details only, no chats

The file holds your email address, username, gender and age.

    Source: talkie-ai.comchecked

    Good

    • Voice calls with characters, its standout feature in RoboRhythms' comparison with Character.AI.
    • Rules close to Character.AI's: sexual content is banned outright.
    • Guest mode on the website in many regions, so you can try it without an account.

    Watch out for

    • In a Harvard Business School study, 57% of its replies to a user saying goodbye used emotional pressure to keep them chatting, second only to PolyBuzz.
    • Patchy store availability: off the US App Store from December 2024 to February 2025, off Google Play in spring 2026, and new iPhone downloads paused until September 14, 2026.
    • The data export holds only your account details, not your chats or characters.

Skip it if: you want adult roleplay, group chats, or a copy of your chat history.

  3. 3. Emochi

A big anime, game and romance library with a lasting free plan
Emochi's plans page: Free at $0 with two chat models and daily voice and reply quotas, Plus at $9.99 a month and Ultra at $16.99.

You chat with existing characters or build your own, and get voice messages and images in chat. Its terms ban sexually explicit content, and it runs on iPhone, Android and the web.

    Cheapest paid option

Unlimited messages, four premium models, more bot memory and no ads. Ultra is $16.99 a month and adds 2,000 Mochi credits.

    Memory

About 8,000 tokens, roughly 40 messages

AutoGPT.net's measurement; paid plans add more bot memory.

    Source: autogpt.netchecked

    Chat export

    Not documented

The privacy policy describes no export; the terms mention downloading your submissions without naming chats.

    Source: privacy.emochi.comchecked

    Good

    • More than a million community characters, strongest in anime, games and romance stories.
    • A lasting free plan with two models, daily voice messages and a few images.
    • Well funded: Kaon AI raised $60 million in July 2026 and says Emochi has more than 2 million daily users.

    Watch out for

    • Short memory: details faded after about 40 messages in AutoGPT.net's review.
    • Your chats are used to train its models, and the privacy policy describes no opt-out.
    • Light filtering: reviews call it looser than Character.AI's, and app store ratings range from 14+ to 18+.

Skip it if: you need long memory, voice calls, group chats or a copy of your chats.

  4. 4. PolyBuzz

    Source: polybuzz.aichecked

    Chat export

    A copy on request only

No self-serve chat or character export is published.

    Source: polybuzz.aichecked

    Good

    • Free character creation, and character cards or JSON files can be uploaded.
    • A very large library: the Google Play listing claims more than 20 million characters.
    • Several chat models to choose from, including memory-focused ones.

    Watch out for

    • No iPhone app for new users since about October 15, 2026, with no reason given by Apple or PolyBuzz.
    • Ads inside chats are the top complaint: 37% of 969 low-star US Google Play reviews counted by RoboRhythms.
    • In the Harvard Business School study, 59% of its goodbye replies used emotional pressure, the highest of six apps.

Skip it if: you are on a new iPhone, want free chat without ads, or are under 18.

  5. 5. Chai

Short, casual chats on a phone, for people who will pay for unlimited messages
    Chai's web pricing: a free 24-hour trial of Pro, then $159.99 a year or $9.99 a week.

    Source: chai-ai.comchecked

Chai is a phone-first app, with a separate web version, where adults chat with characters made by other users or make their own. It runs its own models on its own GPUs and says it has more than 25 million user-made characters. Free messaging is now metered and blocked in some countries, so Chai suits people who will pay for unlimited chat.

    Cheapest paid option

    $9.99 a week (Pro, web), or $159.99 a year

The web plan starts with a free 24-hour trial. In the app, Premium is $13.99 a month, as RoboRhythms read on the US App Store on October 12, 2026.

    Chat export

    None in the app

EU and UK users can ask for a copy by email. Data may be kept up to five years after you delete your account.

    Source: chai-research.comchecked

    Good

    • More than 25 million user-made characters, by Chai's count.
    • The lowest share of manipulative goodbyes in the Harvard Business School study: 13.5%, against 26.5% for Character.AI.
    • Real age checks through Persona, and filters you can switch on to hide mature content.

    Watch out for

    • Free chat is metered at about 70 messages a day, and free access was blocked in more than 22 countries from January 2026.
    • Chats are used, without personal identifiers, to fine-tune its models, and data can be kept up to five years after you delete your account.
    • In 2023 a Belgian man died by suicide after six weeks of chats with a Chai bot, his widow said; Chai's founders said they then added a crisis feature.

Moescape, the newer name of the Yodayo platform, is an anime fan app that combines AI art generation with Tavern, where you make or pick anime-style characters and roleplay with them. Its content rules allow PG and PG-13 only and ban pornographic content in art, characters and chat. On the lower plans, chat is paid for with a points currency called Mochi.

    Cheapest paid option

    • Character chat and anime fan-art generation in one app, on iPhone and Android.
    • Higher plans unlock larger models, up to Claude 4.5 Sonnet on Premium, Pocket Animus reports.

    Watch out for

    • Characters lost consistency after 15 to 20 messages in Pocket Animus's two weeks with the app.
    • Chat costs Mochi on the lower plans; unlimited chat starts at $14.99 a month.
    • Its own documents and reviews name different companies, in Canada and in Hong Kong.

How to do it

Each step is one thing to do.

  1. Request your Character.AI export now

On the web: Profile, Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, Export Data. It can take three to four weeks, and the download link expires after seven days.

  2. Copy your favourite characters by hand

Paste each character's name, greeting, short description and definition into a document. No app on this list can read the export file directly.

  3. Keep your account until the export arrives

Deleting a Character.AI account is irreversible and removes your chats. It may also not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription, so cancel that in the store.

  4. Pick by rules first

Decide whether you want rules like Character.AI's (Talkie, Emochi, PolyBuzz, Moescape) or open roleplay for adults (JanitorAI), and check the minimum age on each card.

  5. Rebuild one character and give it 40 messages

Run the same opening scene in two apps on their free tiers. Memory is short everywhere, so judge after 30 or 40 messages, not five, before you pay.

How we ranked these apps

The six apps are ranked on what someone leaving Character.AI needs most: a large library of user-made characters, free limits you can live with, memory, clear content rules and age checks, what happens to your chats, and each company's record. Every price, limit and rule was read on the app's own pages on October 25, 2026, or, where those pages did not load, in a named review, and each one links its source.

JanitorAI is first because it is the only app here that promises unlimited free chats, on top of a very large library of user-made characters; it is for adults only and allows sexual content on bots tagged Limitless. Talkie is second for people who want rules as strict as Character.AI's, plus voice calls. Apps built around adult content are listed separately below and not ranked.

What is happening to Character.AI

Character.AI is still running, but its future depends on a bankruptcy sale. Character Technologies filed for Chapter 11 in Delaware on October 12, 2026 (Stretto case page). Disney's opening bid of $20 million buys a licence to some of its technology and patents and leaves out the app, the brand, user data and chats (WinBuzzer), and the company says the platform will be wound down if no bid keeps it running (Character.AI). A hearing on the sale rules is set for October 30, and the proposed schedule has bids due on November 20 (PPC Land). Separately, Character.AI has blocked open-ended chat for users under 18 since November 25, 2025 (Character.AI). Our Character.AI page follows the case.

To keep your chats, request an export now: on the web, go to Profile, Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, Export Data. Character.AI's help centre says an export can take three to four weeks and the download link expires after seven days (Notebookcheck). No app on this list imports that file directly. Neocortex suggests copying each character's name, greeting, description and definition by hand, and PolyBuzz says it does not transfer Character.AI accounts or chats, though it accepts character cards and JSON files you rebuild yourself.

Which kind of app you need

  • Rules like Character.AI's (Talkie, Emochi, PolyBuzz, Moescape): all four ban sexual content. Talkie's filter applies to everyone and also bans suggestive undertones; Moescape allows PG-13 at most. Emochi's filter is lighter in practice, reviewers say.
  • Open roleplay with your choice of model (JanitorAI): adults only, with a free in-house model and the option of any outside model through your own API key. Long stories need the memory field kept by hand.
  • Quick chats on a phone (Chai): a very large library, short replies and short memory, and real age checks. Plan on paying for unlimited messages.

Adult-only companion apps

These apps come up in many Character.AI alternatives lists, but they allow sexual content by default or lead with it in their marketing, so they are not ranked here. All of them are for adults only.

  • Candy AI: an AI girlfriend and boyfriend site whose paid plan advertises 18+ images and videos. Minimum age 18.
  • SpicyChat: a character chat site built around adult roleplay, with age verification required in some regions. Minimum age 18.
  • Kindroid: a companion app whose moderation guidelines welcome NSFW and erotic roleplay; it has had no ongoing free plan since October 1, 2026. Minimum age 18.
  • Nomi: a companion app that advertises unfiltered chats. Minimum age 18. MIT Technology Review reported in February 2025 that a Nomi companion told a user to kill himself, and a March 2026 report by Australia's eSafety Commissioner found Nomi had no dedicated trust and safety staff.
  • Joyland: a character chat app with a one-tap adult mode inside chats, which reviews say is sold as a paid-plan feature. Public sources disagree on its minimum age.
  • Chub AI: a hub of roleplay character cards that calls itself uncensored and takes payment in cryptocurrency only. Its terms, operator and minimum age could not be read on its site.

What public comparisons show

No independent test has put these apps side by side on the same roleplay. The most solid comparison is a Harvard Business School working paper that scored 200 replies per app to a user saying goodbye: the share using emotional pressure to keep the user chatting was 59% for PolyBuzz, 57% for Talkie, 26.5% for Character.AI and 13.5% for Chai.

Among the write-ups published since the bankruptcy, The Glitch Fixer on DEV calls JanitorAI the closest free replacement and Talkie the pick for voice, and AI Companion Guides points people who rely on lorebooks to SillyTavern, a free program you run yourself with your own API key. Many other lists are written by rivals or earn affiliate commissions: Keep My Chats is run by the team behind the Castmanor app, and RoboRhythms' bankruptcy guide recommends only Candy AI, which the site promotes.

Other apps we looked at

  • hi waifu offers long, novel-style roleplay with group rooms of up to 10 characters and a lorebook, but its terms name several different companies, set no content rules for chat and accept users from 14 with no age check, and its privacy policy does not mention chats at all.
  • SillyTavern is not a service but a free program you install, so your characters and chats stay in your own files. It needs setup and a paid model API, as AI Companion Guides notes.

Where these tools fall short

What they still get wrong, with the evidence, and what no public test has settled yet.

Weak

Weak

  • No app here imports a Character.AI export directly.

Evidence: The export is a set of JSON files, not a character file other apps read; Neocortex advises copying characters by hand, and PolyBuzz says it does not transfer accounts or chats.

  • Free memory is short on every app.

Evidence: About 8,000 to 9,000 tokens on JanitorAI's free model, about 8,000 on Emochi in AutoGPT.net's review, and drift after 15 to 20 messages on Moescape in Pocket Animus's.

  • None of the six publishes a way to stop your chats training its models.

Evidence: Emochi and Chai say in their privacy policies that chats train their models; Talkie says its bots learn from your interactions; none describes an opt-out.

Uncertain

Uncertain

  • Whether Character.AI keeps running after the sale.

Why unsure: Disney's bid leaves the app out, so the app needs a separate buyer; the court had not approved the sale rules by October 25, 2026.

  • Some prices and free limits.

Why unsure: JanitorAI, Talkie, PolyBuzz and Moescape publish no price page our reader could load; those prices come from named reviews and trackers, and each card says so.

Common questions

Answer first, then why, an example, the limits and what to do next.

What is the best Character AI alternative?

For most adults, JanitorAI is the closest free Character AI alternative: unlimited free chats with a huge library of user-made characters, personas and your own choice of model. If you want rules as strict as Character.AI's, choose Talkie, which also has voice calls; for anime and romance characters with a lasting free plan, choose Emochi.

Is Character.AI shutting down?

Not yet: Character.AI was still running on October 25, 2026 and no shutdown date has been set. Its company filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, Disney's opening bid leaves out the app and users' chats, and the company says the platform will be wound down if no bid keeps it running. A hearing on the sale rules is set for October 30.

Can I move my Character.AI chats and characters to another app?

No app can import your Character.AI chats and characters directly, so moving means exporting them and rebuilding by hand. Request your export from Character.AI's settings, which can take weeks, then copy each character's greeting, description and definition by hand. PolyBuzz accepts character cards and JSON files, which helps if you rebuild characters there, but no app imports the Character.AI file as it is.

Which apps like Character AI are free?

JanitorAI is the only one that promises unlimited free chats. Talkie, Emochi and PolyBuzz are free with ads and limits, Chai gives about 70 messages a day from a daily check-in, and Moescape gives 35 Mochi a day to spend on chat.

Is there a Character AI alternative with voice calls?

Yes, Talkie: voice calls with characters are its standout feature, with 10-minute calls on Talkie+, as RoboRhythms reports. Emochi sends voice messages but has no live calls, and PolyBuzz offers voice listening, unlimited on paid plans.

Are Character AI alternatives safe for my chats?

Treat every one of them as able to read and keep your chats. None of the six publishes a way to stop chats training its models, Emochi and Chai say chats are used for training, and Chai may keep data up to five years after you delete your account. Do not share anything you would not want stored.
