Best remove.bg Alternatives in 2026: 7 Background Removers to Switch To Before December 1

6 min readPublished Updated

Photoroom is the best remove.bg alternative for most people before remove.bg closes on December 1, 2026: its API takes the same calls at $0.02 an image and its app adds batch editing. Pixelcut is the free pick for single cutouts, PicWish's API costs about a cent an image, and Pixlr does free batches.

Disclosure

None of these seven products is made by the team behind GenGrades, and none paid to be listed. They are ranked on what matters when leaving remove.bg: published evidence on edge quality, free output, price per image, batch and API options, commercial terms and what happens to your uploads.

The picks, in order

What each one does, what it costs and where it falls short.

  1. 1. Photoroom

    Moving a remove.bg API integration or a product-photo workflow
Photoroom's pricing page on yearly billing: Pro at $7.50 a month (from $12.99), Max at $20.99 and Ultra at $82.50.
Photoroom's pricing page on yearly billing: Pro at $7.50 a month (from $12.99), Max at $20.99 and Ultra at $82.50.

    Source: photoroom.comchecked

Photoroom is an AI photo editor for product images whose background remover sits next to AI backgrounds, shadows, templates and batch editing. For remove.bg API users it is the shortest move: Photoroom documents a compatibility mode in which only the endpoint and the key change, at $0.02 an image. It also comes first in both background-removal comparisons that Photoroom runs itself.

    Cheapest paid option

$12.99 a month (Pro), or $7.50 a month billed yearly

Pro includes 1,000 exports a month. The Remove Background API is billed separately: $20 a month for 1,000 images, $0.02 each.

    Source: photoroom.comchecked

    Free option

25 exports a week, personal use only

Photoroom's help centre caps free web exports at 2000 x 2000 px and rules out commercial use on free accounts. SoftPicker and Dupple say free exports carry a watermark.

    API price

$0.02 an image (Remove Background, Basic plan)

10 free production calls with an account. Plans of 250+ images a month are not charged for cutouts that fail.

    Source: photoroom.comchecked

    Batch

50 images a run on Pro, 250 on Max

Batch exports count toward the monthly export cap; on the web they stop at 2048 x 2048 px.

    Source: photoroom.comchecked

    Your uploads

Used to train Photoroom's models unless you opt out

The opt-out is under Data Control in account settings. Images sent through the API are not used for training.

    Source: photoroom.comchecked

    Good

    • A documented remove.bg compatibility mode: change the endpoint and the key, keep the same arguments and result format.
    • $0.02 an image through the API, under a fifth of the $0.1047 Leonardo.Ai charges for remove.bg's model.
    • Cutouts go straight into AI backgrounds, shadows, templates and batch editing for marketplace listings.

    Watch out for

    • Its lead on edge quality rests on tests Photoroom runs itself; Dupple's June 2026 review still found remove.bg more accurate on the hardest edges.
    • Free accounts are personal-use only and capped at 25 exports a week.
    • Trustpilot score of 2.2 from 274 reviews, mostly about charges after trials and refunds; plans and credits changed several times in 2025 and 2026.

Skip it if: you want free full-size cutouts for a shop, or you do not want your uploads used for training unless you opt out.

  2. 2. Pixelcut

Free single cutouts with no sign-up and no watermark

    Source: pixelcut.aichecked

Pixelcut is an image editor for online sellers with a free web background remover that needs no account and adds no watermark. Paid plans make background removal unlimited and add batch exports, and a separate API charges per call. Reviewers find its edges a little softer than remove.bg's on hair and fuzzy fabric.

    Cheapest paid option

$10 a month (Pro), or $8 a month billed yearly

Unlimited background removal, 1,000 batch exports a month and a commercial licence.

    Source: pixelcut.aichecked

    Free option

Free web remover, no sign-up, no watermark

Pixelcut says the free download is HD at the original size (uploads up to 6000 x 6000 px), but its pricing page lists the free plan as 'Limited Background Removal' with no number.

    Source: pixelcut.aichecked

    API price

    $0.05 an image (5 credits)

100 free credits for every developer account, enough for 20 cutouts. Credit plans start at $10 for 1,000 credits.

    Source: pixelcut.aichecked

    Batch

Up to 10,000 images in one batch

Free users can preview up to 50; downloading a batch needs Pro (1,000 batch exports a month) or Business (2,000).

    Source: pixelcut.aichecked

    Your uploads

API files deleted within 24 hours

Pixelcut says it does not train on your data without consent. The app's privacy policy sets no retention period.

    Source: pixelcut.aichecked

    Good

    • No account and no watermark for single cutouts.
    • Unlimited background removal from $8 a month on the yearly plan.
    • API files are deleted within 24 hours and are not used for training without consent.

    Watch out for

    • Slightly softer edges than remove.bg on fuzzy sweaters and hair in Dupple's June 2026 review.
    • Its API docs say it does not support glass or other translucent materials, and at $0.05 an image it costs more than Photoroom or PicWish.
    • Trustpilot score of 1.7 from 70 reviews, mostly about unexpected charges and refused refunds.

Skip it if: you cut out glass bottles or other see-through products, or you need a cheap high-volume API.

  3. 3. PicWish

PicWish's background remover page, with single uploads and a Bulk Edit option for up to 100 images.
PicWish's background remover page, with single uploads and a Bulk Edit option for up to 100 images.

    Source: picwish.comchecked

PicWish is an AI photo editor whose core tool removes backgrounds on the web, in mobile apps, on Windows and through an API. Its API charges half a credit per cutout, about one cent an image, and PicWish says free users get 50 watermark-free downloads a day. In autogpt.net's October 2026 review it kept curly hair better than Canva's remover.

    Cheapest paid option

    $59.99 a year (Pro), shown as $4.99 a month

100 HD downloads a day plus 450 credits a month. Weekly and monthly billing are also offered; the remover page says subscriptions start at $5.99.

    Source: picwish.comchecked

    Free option

50 downloads a day without watermark, per PicWish

PicWish's own comparison calls the free output standard definition, and its pricing page lists the free plan as 'Limited' with no batch processing. autogpt.net found 10 non-HD downloads a day with a watermark.

    Source: picwish.comchecked

    API price

About $0.01 an image (0.5 credit)

500 credits a month cost $9.95. The API page gives 50 free credits on sign-up, which covers 100 test cutouts.

    Source: picwish.comchecked

    Batch

100 images online, 10,000 on Windows

The free plan does not include batch processing.

    Source: picwish.comchecked

    Your uploads

Deleted 1 hour after you leave the page

The policy does not say whether uploads train models. PicWish names no company; its privacy contact uses WangXu Technology's domain.

    Source: picwish.comchecked

    Good

    • About one cent an image through the API, with 100 free test cutouts.
    • A daily free allowance on the web, and batches of 100 images online.
    • Kept curls and flyaway strands that Canva's remover erased in autogpt.net's October 2026 review.

    Watch out for

    • The free terms are unclear: PicWish says 50 a day without watermark, while a reviewer found 10 a day with one.
    • A white mug on a white table and some reflective jewellery needed manual touch-ups in the same review.
    • The terms say nothing about commercial use or who owns the result, and are governed by Chinese law.

Skip it if: you need commercial-use rights in writing or a published maximum output size.

Pixlr's AI background remover page, headed 'Free AI Background Remover For Everyone'.

    Source: pixlr.comchecked

Pixlr is a browser photo editor whose background remover is free for everyone, handles images up to 4096 x 4096 pixels and takes more than 100 images at once, saved together as a ZIP. Paid plans buy AI credits for Pixlr's other tools, not cutouts. It has no public API, and the one independent test that includes it put it behind remove.bg.

    Cheapest paid option

Free; Plus is $2.49 a month, or $1.99 billed yearly

Plus removes ads and save limits and adds 80 AI credits a month. The remover itself is not a paid feature.

    Source: pixlr.comchecked

    Your uploads

    No retention period published

The privacy policy does not say how long photos are kept or whether they train models; the terms let Pixlr use customer data to improve its services.

    Source: pixlr.comchecked

    Good

    • Free with no credit cost, including batches of more than 100 images.
    • Up to 4096 x 4096 pixels on the free tool.
    • Softness, restore and remove controls for edges, and an editor for new backdrops in the same browser tab.

    Watch out for

    • No API, so it does not replace the remove.bg API.
    • Clean on about 18 of 30 images in SoftPicker's April 2026 test, against 26 for remove.bg.
    • The terms do not address commercial use of edited images, and payments are not refunded.

Removal.AI's home page with its free single-image uploader.

    Source: removal.aichecked

Removal.AI is a dedicated background remover with a web tool, a 100-image bulk uploader, Mac and Windows apps and an API that all draw on the same credits. It works much like remove.bg did: free low-resolution previews, then one credit per full-resolution image, from $5.99 for 100 a month. The company behind it is hard to pin down, and its terms contradict themselves on commercial use.

    Cheapest paid option

    $5.99 a month for 100 credits

About $0.06 an image, falling to under $0.02 at 90,000 a month; bulk uploads cost half a credit. One-time packs start at $1.89 for 3 credits and last 3 years.

The policy does not mention training, names no data controller and has no date.

    Good

    • The closest to remove.bg's model: free previews, one credit per HD image, and the same credits in the API.
    • Credits roll over up to five times the monthly amount while you subscribe, and lifetime packs last 3 years.
    • Rated good on hair and strong on bulk and API work in Fast.io's May 2026 comparison.

    Watch out for

    • Free output is tiny: 0.25 megapixels, about 500 x 500 pixels.
    • The terms both allow and exclude commercial use and name no company; the UK company REMOVAL.AI LTD was dissolved in 2022.
    • Only 'adequate' on transparent objects in Fast.io's comparison, and Removal.AI says see-through fabric and shiny surfaces often need a second look.

Skip it if: you need commercial rights in writing, or free cutouts larger than a thumbnail.

A separate API platform lists background removal at $0.0011 a call. What free users get is not published, and the licence you grant Picsart over your uploads is broad.

    Cheapest paid option

    Watch out for

    • No published free allowance, size or watermark rule for the remover.
    • No independent edge test of Picsart's remover turned up in 2026 comparisons.
    • Picsart's own pages disagree on the Ultra price: $60 or $24.50 a month billed yearly.

Facts we checked

Stated plainly, with where each one comes from and when we last looked.

remove.bg says annual subscribers get a pro-rata refund for unused time after December 1, and monthly renewals on or after November 1 are free.

remove.bg's Enterprise API contracts are not affected and continue as normal.

Source: remove.bgchecked

Photoroom's Remove Background API has a remove.bg compatibility mode: the arguments and result format stay the same, only the endpoint and key change.

Source: docs.photoroom.comchecked

How to do it

Each step is one thing to do.

  1. Download your invoices and usage report

remove.bg says accounts close with the site on December 1, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. CET and the history cannot be downloaded afterwards. Export the credit usage report and invoices from your Account page now.

  2. Spend your remaining credits

Unused credits of every kind expire on December 1 without refund. Use them first on the images you need at full resolution.

  3. Pick by how you use remove.bg

For single images, try Pixelcut or Pixlr free. For batches, try Pixlr, PicWish or Photoroom. For the API, Photoroom's compatibility mode needs the fewest code changes.

  4. Move your API calls

With Photoroom, point the request at its Remove Background endpoint and use a Photoroom key; the arguments stay the same. With Leonardo.Ai, create a new key and rewrite requests as JSON with a Bearer token. Run a few hundred of your own images through the new service before switching traffic.

  5. Check commercial terms

Photoroom, Fotor and Removal.AI allow only personal use on free accounts, and PicWish and Pixlr do not address commercial use at all. If the cutouts go into listings or ads, pay for a plan that grants commercial use.

  6. Replace plugins and automations

The Photoshop plugin ends on December 1; remove.bg suggests Affinity, whose background removal needs Canva Pro. Zapier or Make steps that use a remove.bg API key run on the self-service API, which stops accepting requests the same day.

How we ranked these remove.bg alternatives

Each tool was placed on what matters when you leave remove.bg: published evidence on edge quality, how large the free result is, the price of one full-resolution cutout, batch and API options, what the terms say about commercial use, and what happens to the photos you upload. Every price and limit was read on the maker's own pages on October 25, 2026 and carries its link. Only tools with a large public user base made the list.

Photoroom is first because it is the easiest move for both kinds of remove.bg user: the API takes the same calls and the app covers batches and product backgrounds. Pixelcut and PicWish follow for free single cutouts and a low-cost API.

What changes on December 1, 2026

remove.bg's FAQ says the standalone website stops on December 1, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. CET. Background removal moves into Canva, which remove.bg says uses the same technology and handles bulk batches; its pricing page calls it free to try in HD inside Canva, while Dupple's June 2026 review says Canva's remover needs Canva Pro. The self-service API stops accepting requests the same day and moves to Leonardo.Ai, also owned by Canva: Leonardo's migration guide keeps remove.bg's options but needs a new account and key, JSON requests with a Bearer token, and costs $0.1047 an image. Enterprise API contracts continue as normal.

  • Credits: every kind expires on December 1 without refund, under section 3.4 of remove.bg's general terms.
  • Subscriptions: annual plans get a pro-rata refund for time after December 1; monthly renewals on or after November 1 are free.
  • Account data: invoices and the credit usage report cannot be downloaded after the site closes.
  • Photoshop plugin: it ends too; remove.bg suggests Affinity, whose background removal needs a Canva Pro subscription.

Our remove.bg review has the full timeline.

Free tool, editor or API: which one you need

  • A few cutouts by hand: Pixelcut and Pixlr are free in the browser. Pixelcut needs no account; Pixlr takes batches. Check the terms before you sell with free cutouts: Photoroom, Fotor and Removal.AI allow only personal use on free accounts.
  • Product photos for a shop: Photoroom, Pixelcut and Picsart add white or AI backgrounds, shadows and batch exports after the cutout.
  • An API in your own code: Photoroom ($0.02 an image, remove.bg-compatible), PicWish (about $0.01), Removal.AI (about $0.06, less at volume) and Pixelcut ($0.05). Pixlr has none.

What public comparisons show

No independent test has run all seven on the same images. SoftPicker's April 2026 test of 30 images found clean cutouts on 26 for remove.bg, 20 for Fotor and about 18 for Pixlr; remove.bg was strongest on hair but lost the transparency of glass, and its free file was only 625 x 400 pixels. Fast.io's May 2026 comparison rated remove.bg best on hair, Photoroom very good, Removal.AI good and Pixlr adequate, and put ClipDrop first on transparent objects. Dupple's June 2026 review calls remove.bg the most accurate on the hardest edges, Photoroom strong for product shots and Pixelcut good but softer on hair and fuzzy fabric.

Photoroom's own 45-image benchmark counted 42 clean cutouts for Photoroom against 24 for remove.bg, and the Background Removal Arena, which Photoroom runs, ranked Photoroom first on 20,460 blind votes. Both are vendor evidence. autogpt.net's PicWish review found it strong on curly hair and weaker on white-on-white items.

Other tools we looked at

  • Cutout.Pro is cheap at about $0.05 to $0.06 a full-resolution image and has a desktop batch app, but Have I Been Pwned lists a February 2024 breach of about 20 million Cutout.Pro accounts, which the company called a scam, and in 2023 researchers found an open database exposing images users had uploaded. For a tool you send photos to, that keeps it off this list.
  • Canva and Leonardo.Ai are where remove.bg itself sends people, so they are covered above rather than ranked against it.
  • Adobe Express was free at full resolution in both SoftPicker's and Futura-Sciences' tests and clean on 22 of SoftPicker's 30 images. It is a full design app rather than a dedicated remover and is not ranked here.
  • Photopea, used by hand, gave SoftPicker the cleanest hair and glass of all, at two to five minutes an image.

Where these tools fall short

What they still get wrong, with the evidence, and what no public test has settled yet.

Weak

Weak

  • No independent test has put all seven on the same images.

Evidence: SoftPicker's 30-image test covered Fotor and Pixlr, Fast.io covered Photoroom, Removal.AI and Pixlr, and Dupple covered Photoroom and Pixelcut; PicWish and Picsart appear in none of them.

  • Free tiers are smaller or vaguer than the marketing suggests.

Evidence: Removal.AI's free output is 0.25 MP, Photoroom's free plan is personal-use only, and PicWish, Picsart and Fotor publish conflicting or no free limits.

  • Glass and see-through products are hard for all of them.

Evidence: remove.bg lost glass transparency in SoftPicker's test, Pixelcut's API docs say it does not support translucent materials, and Removal.AI says see-through fabric often needs a second look.

Uncertain

Uncertain

  • Whether Photoroom cuts out more cleanly than remove.bg did.

Why unsure: Photoroom wins both comparisons it runs itself (42 of 45 against 24, and the top score in its arena), while Dupple's independent review still rates remove.bg more accurate on the hardest edges.

  • What PicWish and Fotor free users actually get.

Why unsure: Their remover pages promise free watermark-free downloads, while their pricing pages and 2026 reviews describe lower quality, watermarks or lower daily limits.

Common questions

Answer first, then why, an example, the limits and what to do next.

What is the best alternative to remove.bg?

Photoroom is the best remove.bg alternative for most people: its API accepts the same calls for $0.02 an image, and its app adds batch editing and product backgrounds from $7.50 a month billed yearly. For free single cutouts Pixelcut needs no account, and for a low-cost API PicWish works out to about a cent an image.

Is remove.bg shutting down?

The standalone remove.bg website shuts down on December 1, 2026, at 9:00 CET. Background removal moves into Canva, the self-service API moves to Leonardo.Ai, and every unused credit expires that day; Enterprise API contracts continue.

What is a free alternative to remove.bg?

Pixelcut's web remover is free with no sign-up and no watermark, and Pixlr's is free for batches of more than 100 images at up to 4096 x 4096 pixels. PicWish says it gives 50 free downloads a day. Free cutouts are often for personal use only, so check the terms before you sell with them.

What replaces the remove.bg API?

remove.bg points developers to Leonardo.Ai, which runs the same background removal for $0.1047 an image with a new key and JSON requests. Photoroom's compatibility mode keeps remove.bg's arguments and result format at $0.02 an image, and PicWish's API costs about $0.01 an image.

What happens to my remove.bg credits?

All remove.bg credits expire on December 1, 2026 without refund, whether pay-as-you-go or subscription credits. According to remove.bg's FAQ, annual subscribers get a pro-rata refund for time after that date and monthly renewals on or after November 1 are free.

Which background remover is best for hair and glass?

No single tool leads on both. Independent reviewers rate remove.bg itself strongest on hair with Photoroom close behind, Fast.io rated ClipDrop best on transparent objects, and Pixelcut's API does not support glass at all. For a few hard images, a careful manual cut in Photopea gave SoftPicker the cleanest hair and glass.
