This page is built from what can be checked today: DuckDuckGo's help pages, Privacy Terms and blog, reviews by TechRadar and Tom's Guide, and the official pages of Proton Lumo, Brave Leo and ChatGPT. Model names and prices are as DuckDuckGo listed them on October 17, 2026.

Source: DuckDuckGo's model list and price page. Plus also includes a VPN, Personal Information Removal (US only) and Identity Theft Restoration; euro and pound prices use the same figures. The subscription is sold in the US, UK, EU and Canada; Duck.ai itself works in any browser (DuckDuckGo). There is no AI-only plan, and outside a subscription there is no way to buy more usage (DuckDuckGo).
How the privacy design works
Everything in this section is DuckDuckGo's own description (privacy help page):
- DuckDuckGo calls the model provider for you and removes your IP address and other identifying metadata, so the request appears to come from DuckDuckGo.
- It stores no chats on its servers; recent chats stay on your device unless you turn on the optional, end-to-end encrypted Sync & Backup (chat history).
- All providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, Microsoft Azure and Tinfoil) agree not to train on Duck.ai chats and to delete prompts and replies right after answering. Anthropic may keep chats where the law requires or to fight misuse, and OpenAI and Anthropic may hold chats in memory for up to an hour for prompt caching.
- Providers receive today's date, your time zone and unit system, and your city only if you switch on approximate location (what is shared). Tinfoil runs gpt-oss-120b and Gemma 4 31B in a trusted execution environment that Tinfoil itself cannot see into.
The wording is not the same everywhere. The Duck.ai Privacy Terms, updated October 1, 2026, say providers delete data at most within 30 days and offer Zero Data Retention only on some models, and that retention can run longer for safety and legal compliance. At launch in 2024 DuckDuckGo also promised deletion within 30 days. We found no independent audit of the proxy or the provider agreements.
What public tests show
- TechRadar, July 13, 2026. Ritoban Mukherjee used the free and Pro tiers for several weeks and ran the same multi-step analytical prompt on both. Claude Opus 4.7 on Pro gave a more structured answer; for everyday writing the free tier was enough. He listed vague usage limits, mid-tier free models and the lack of an AI-only plan as reasons to avoid it, and found free-tier replies slightly slower than ChatGPT's.
- Tom's Guide, October 21, 2025. Alex Hughes found Duck.ai more protective of data than any chatbot he had tried, but far more limited than ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude: no image or video generation and no deep research at the time. DuckDuckGo has since added image creation (DuckDuckGo).
How it compares with Proton Lumo, Brave Leo and ChatGPT's temporary chat
| Service | What its maker says about your chats | Paid tier |
|---|
| Duck.ai | IP address removed, no training, provider deletion as described above | 9.99 or 19.99 USD a month, bundled with a VPN |
| Proton Lumo | No logs; saved chats under zero-access encryption; no training | Lumo Plus, 9.99 USD a month billed yearly |
| Brave Leo | No IP address or other identifiers collected; chats not kept for training; free use needs no account | Leo Premium; price not on Brave's Leo page |
| ChatGPT temporary chat | Kept out of history and training; OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety | ChatGPT's paid plans |
No public test has put these four side by side. Duck.ai's draw is choice: models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral and Google's Gemma in one place without an account.
Who should wait
- Developers: there is no public API, TechRadar notes.
- Heavy users: DuckDuckGo publishes no message limit.
- Anyone whose prompts must never leave their device: every message still reaches an outside provider.
- People outside the US, UK, EU and Canada who want the paid models.
