What Inworld Router is

In one or two sentences, before anything else.

Inworld Router is Inworld AI's model-routing API, which sends OpenAI- and Anthropic-style requests to third-party models at the providers' list prices with no markup and can route by user metadata. On October 14, 2026 Inworld folded it into Inworld Inference, which also serves open models on Inworld's own hardware; inworld.ai/router now redirects there.

Main features

What it can do, one sentence each, and whether we actually tested it.

  • No markup on third-party models

Inworld's billing docs say requests routed to third-party providers cost 'the provider's listed cost with no markup'.

Inworld's claim. Its listed prices for Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6 Astra and Gemini 4 Argon matched the makers' on October 21, 2026.

  • Routing by user and A/B splits

Saved routers (model 'inworld/<router-id>') choose a model from request metadata with CEL expressions, split traffic by weight with sticky user assignment, and export exposure data to BigQuery or Mixpanel.

Per Inworld's routing docs; no outside report of results.

  • Provider and model fallbacks

By default a request goes to the lowest-latency provider and moves to the next on failure; you can set provider order, sort by price, or list fallback models per request.

Each model in a fallback chain that produced output is billed at its own rate.

  • OpenAI and Anthropic endpoints

Chat completions, Responses (with web search) and moderations at api.inworld.ai/v1, and Anthropic Messages with token counting at api.inworld.ai.

Authentication is a Basic or Bearer header; the Anthropic x-api-key header is not read.

  • Text, image, video and voice on one balance

Image output through chat completions, video through /v1/videos, and Inworld's text-to-speech in the same chat completion call.

Per Inworld's docs; voice is Inworld's main product.

  • Inworld-hosted open models

Since October 14, 2026, models such as Gemma 4, GLM 5.3 Flash, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and MiMo run on Inworld's own hardware, with flex, default, priority and fast service tiers.

Inworld's speed figures for them are its own and, by its own account, not a matched benchmark.

  • Official MCP server in the CLI

`inworld mcp` (from the @inworld/cli package) exposes speech, LLM chat, workspace limits, a billing summary and router management as MCP tools for Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code.

Runs locally as the signed-in CLI user; there is no hosted documentation MCP server.

Who it is for

The people it helps and the problems it solves, and where it ranks.

Built for

  • Consumer apps that want to test models per user segment, language or plan
  • Voice and character apps already using Inworld's text-to-speech or speech-to-text
  • Teams moving off OpenRouter or the Anthropic API who want the same SDKs with failover
  • Developers who want Inworld-hosted open models such as Gemma 4 or GLM with low first-token latency

Problems it solves

  • No way to A/B test models on real users without building routing code
  • One provider's outage or rate limit breaking a live chat app
  • Separate bills for LLMs and speech
  • Paying a relay fee on top of list prices

Graded in

What it is good at

Public tests other people ran: what they gave it and how it did.

  1. Case 1

Per Inworld's Claude Code guide: routing Claude Code through Inworld

    Input

export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.inworld.ai and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=<Inworld key>, then claude --model openai/gpt-5.4 or claude --model anthropic/claude-opus-4-6.

    What happened

Inworld says Claude Code then falls back to another provider when Anthropic is rate-limited and shows its usage in Inworld's portal. Its Anthropic endpoint drops mcp_servers, container, PDFs and thinking blocks, so some Claude Code features may not carry over.

  2. Case 2

Per Inworld's routing docs: an A/B test of two models on live users

    Input

A saved router with a conditional route on request metadata (for example the user's language) and a weighted split between two models with sticky user assignment, called as model 'inworld/<router-id>'.

    What happened

Each user stays on one variant, and exposure data can be exported to BigQuery or Mixpanel to compare outcomes. No results from such a test have been published outside Inworld's own case studies.

  3. Case 3

    In Inworld's Inference launch post (October 14, 2026, a vendor's measurements): hosted Gemma 4 26B

    Input

Production traffic to Inworld-hosted Gemma 4 26B over 24 hours, compared with OpenRouter's snapshots of its providers for the same model.

    What happened

Inworld reports a p95 time to first token of 0.31 s against 2.42 s for the median OpenRouter provider. Inworld says this is not a matched-workload benchmark, and it says nothing about third-party routing.

Where it falls short

What it does badly, with the evidence, and what we could not settle.

Weak

Weak

  • The product was renamed and refocused within days.

Evidence: inworld.ai/router redirects to /inference since October 14, 2026; the router page claimed 220+ models on October 4 and the models page listed 129 on October 21, with no explanation.

  • Anthropic features are lost through its Anthropic endpoint.

Evidence: Inworld's Anthropic compatibility docs: mcp_servers, container, top_k, service_tier, PDF documents and thinking blocks are dropped, and server tools such as web search are passed as plain functions and not run.

  • No independent evidence.

Evidence: No third-party benchmark or user review of the router has been published; Product Hunt reviews are about Inworld's voice products, and the only numbers are Inworld's own.

  • Strict money terms.

Evidence: Inworld's terms: payments are non-refundable except where law requires. Billing docs: minimum credit purchase 10 USD; extra credits expire after one year.

  • Limited data controls for routed models.

Evidence: Zero data retention covers speech and Inworld-hosted LLMs only, and the setting can be changed only on Enterprise plans; routed requests follow each provider's policy.

  • Not for anyone who needs a stable, independently checked relay.

Evidence: A product renamed on October 14, 2026, with a shrinking public catalog, no outside tests and router incidents in April, May and July 2026, is a weak base for production systems without a fallback.

Uncertain

Uncertain

  • Whether third-party routing will continue long term.

Why unsure: The Inference launch post is about Inworld-hosted models and does not say what happens to third-party routing, though the docs still describe it.

  • Why the catalog shrank.

Why unsure: Inworld does not say whether models were removed or counted differently after the relaunch.

  • BYOK terms.

Why unsure: The BYOK doc page requires a login; only the billing docs' note on rejected keys is public.

  • LLM rate limits.

Why unsure: Published concurrency limits cover speech; no LLM-specific limit is published.

Common questions

Answer first, then why, an example, the limits and what to do next.

What happened to Inworld Router?

Inworld Router became part of Inworld Inference on October 14, 2026. Inworld launched Inference to serve open models on its own hardware, and inworld.ai/router now redirects to inworld.ai/inference; the routing features remain in the docs under the Inference name.

Limits

Inworld has not said whether third-party routing will continue long term, and its listed catalog fell from 220+ to 129 models in October.

Is Inworld Router cheaper than the official APIs?

Inworld Router charges the same as the official APIs for third-party models, not less. Its billing docs promise the provider's listed cost with no markup, and on October 21, 2026 it listed Claude Opus 5.5 at 4 / 20 USD and GPT-6 Astra at 10 / 50 USD per million tokens, the makers' own prices.

Why

Extra costs come from web search fees, every model in a fallback chain that answers, and BYOK requests retried on Inworld's key.

How much does Inworld Router cost?

Inworld Router has no platform fee; you pay per token from prepaid credits, with a 10 USD minimum purchase. Optional plans from 25 to 1,500 USD a month return their price as credits, but their discounts apply to speech, not LLMs.

Limits

Payments are non-refundable except where law requires, and extra credits expire after one year.

Is Inworld Router legit and safe to use?

Inworld AI is an established, venture-funded company with public terms and a SOC 2 Type II claim, but its router has almost no independent track record. No outside benchmark or user review of the router has been published, and zero data retention covers only Inworld-hosted models and is set on Enterprise plans.

Does Inworld Router support MCP?

Inworld ships an official MCP server inside its CLI, but its API does not pass MCP servers to models. `inworld mcp` gives Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code tools for speech, LLM chat, billing and router management, while the Anthropic endpoint drops the mcp_servers field.

Limits

No official Agent Skills were found, and the Anthropic endpoint also drops container, so Anthropic's Skills API does not work through it.

Inworld Router vs OpenRouter: which should I use?

Inworld Router suits apps that need per-user routing and A/B tests at list prices; OpenRouter suits developers who want the widest catalog. OpenRouter adds 5.5% to credit purchases on its Standard plan but lists many more open-weight hosts and free models, and it has a far longer public track record.

What the public tests show

This page is built from Inworld AI's inference, models, pricing, security and terms pages, its docs and llms.txt, its public status tracker, archived copies of the old router page, Inworld's own launch measurements and comparison page, a competitor's review and public user reviews, all checked on October 21, 2026. Inworld's claims are labelled as its own.

What changed on October 14, 2026

Inworld AI sold Inworld Router, also called LLM Router and Realtime Router, as one OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible endpoint for third-party models. Archived copies of inworld.ai/router promised "One API for 200+ AI Models" in March 2026 and "220+ models, zero markup" on October 4, 2026. On October 14, 2026 Inworld launched Inworld Inference, which serves open models such as Gemma 4, GLM, DeepSeek and MiMo on Inworld's own hardware, and inworld.ai/router now redirects to inworld.ai/inference.

The routing features did not disappear. The docs keep them under the Inference name, at the same /router/ paths: saved routers, conditional routes, traffic splits, provider fallbacks and request-level routing. The launch post does not mention the Router name or say what happens to third-party routing. Inworld's models page listed 129 models on October 21 (109 of them text), against the 220+ claimed on October 4; Inworld gives no reason for the difference.

What Inworld Router sells

You send OpenAI-style chat completions or Responses requests to api.inworld.ai/v1, or Anthropic-style messages to api.inworld.ai, and name a model (anthropic/claude-opus-5-5, openai/gpt-6-sol) or a saved router (inworld/<router-id>). Providers named in the docs include OpenAI, Anthropic, Google AI Studio, Vertex AI, DeepInfra, DeepSeek, Mistral, Groq and xAI. A saved router can choose a model from request metadata with CEL expressions (language, plan, emotion, message length), split traffic by weight with sticky user assignment for A/B tests, and export exposure data to BigQuery or Mixpanel. The same key and balance cover image and video generation and Inworld's speech APIs; a chat completion can even return synthesized speech.

Prices against the official APIs

Inworld's billing docs say: "For LLM requests routed to third-party providers through Inworld, you pay the provider's listed cost with no markup." For the models checked, its models page matched the makers:

Model, per million input / output tokensInworldOfficial priceOfficial source
Claude Opus 5.54 / 20 USD4 / 20 USDAnthropic
Claude Sonnet 5.52 / 10 USD2 / 10 USDAnthropic
GPT-6 Astra10 / 50 USD10 / 50 USDOpenAI
Gemini 4 Argon2 / 10 USD2 / 10 USD until November 30, 2026; 4 / 20 USD from December 1Google

Inworld's prices come from its models page. Some things cost extra: each web search step adds the search engine's fee, every model in a fallback chain that produced output is billed, and a BYOK request whose key the provider rejects is retried on Inworld's key and billed as Inworld usage. Plans from Creator (25 USD a month) to Growth (1,500 USD) return their price as credits; their discounts apply to speech, not LLMs. The minimum credit purchase is 10 USD, extra credits expire after one year, and the terms make payments non-refundable except where law requires.

Inworld's own hosted models have their own prices. Inworld says Gemma 4 26B, at 0.07 USD per million input tokens, is nearly 40% below the median of other hosts' list prices on October 12, 2026.

What public tests show

No third-party benchmark of Inworld Router has been published. The numbers available are Inworld's own:

  • Inworld's launch post (October 14, 2026) reports Gemma 4 26B at a p95 time to first token of 0.31 s against 2.42 s for the median OpenRouter provider, and GLM 5.3 Flash completing 99.999% of more than 20 million requests over 30 days. Inworld says its figures were measured at its own router while the OpenRouter figures are provider snapshots, not a matched benchmark. They cover models Inworld hosts, not third-party routing.
  • Inworld's comparison page with OpenRouter claims zero markup and CEL routing and sticky A/B splits that OpenRouter lacks. The page warns that its latency headline is not a controlled benchmark and that Inworld has a commercial interest.
  • Respan, a competitor, confirms in a desk review that there is no markup, including on BYOK traffic, and lists missing built-in evals, request-level observability only and hand-written CEL rules.

Reliability and user reports

Inworld's status page runs on a public GitHub issue tracker. Router incidents include intermittent LLM Router outages on April 12, 2026 caused by a Mistral incident (about 1.5 hours), elevated Realtime Router errors on May 16 (about 1 hour 40 minutes) and elevated latency on DeepSeek and Gemma models on July 16 (about 1 hour 20 minutes). Inworld publishes no uptime percentage.

User reviews are about Inworld's voice products: Product Hunt shows 5.0 from 7 reviews praising its text-to-speech. No user discussion of the router turned up on Hacker News or GitHub. Inworld's customer pages cite Status by Wishroll (AI costs down more than 95%) and Latitude (more than 25 million inference calls in six weeks); these are vendor case studies.

MCP, Agent Skills and coding agents

Inworld ships an official MCP server inside its CLI (@inworld/cli). inworld mcp runs over stdio, or over HTTP with --http, and exposes text-to-speech, voice design, speech-to-text, LLM chat, workspace limits, a billing summary and router management as tools. It runs as the signed-in CLI user; the docs show claude mcp add inworld -- inworld mcp for Claude Code. There is no hosted documentation MCP server; agents are pointed to llms.txt and Markdown pages instead.

No official Agent Skills were found in Inworld's docs or on its GitHub. Its Anthropic-compatible endpoint drops the mcp_servers and container fields, so Anthropic's MCP connector and Skills API do not work through it. It also drops PDF documents and thinking blocks, so reasoning across tool-call turns loses its thinking signatures, and it forwards Anthropic server tools such as web search as plain function definitions without running them.

The only coding agent guide is for Claude Code: set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to https://api.inworld.ai and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN to your Inworld key, and Claude Code can also call models such as openai/gpt-5.4. The docs warn that the x-api-key header is not read, so a plain ANTHROPIC_API_KEY setup fails. There are migration guides from OpenRouter and Anthropic.

The OpenAI side supports chat completions, the Responses API with web search, tool calling (parallel_tool_calls and strict are ignored), structured outputs, reasoning effort, prompt caching and streaming. No LLM batch endpoint is documented, there is no Gemini-native format, and Inworld's SDKs cover speech; for LLMs you use the OpenAI or Anthropic SDKs.

Privacy, terms and who runs it

Theai, Inc., doing business as Inworld AI, is based in Mountain View, California. It was founded in 2021, has raised over 100 million USD, and bought the voice-agent startup Ultravox on October 1, 2026. Its security page claims SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and GDPR compliance. Zero data retention covers speech and Inworld-hosted LLMs and can be switched only on Enterprise plans; requests routed to third-party providers fall under those providers' policies.

How it compares with OpenRouter, Vercel and Requesty

  • OpenRouter adds 5.5% to credit purchases on its Standard plan but lists far more open-weight hosts and free models.
  • Vercel AI Gateway also adds no markup, lists 482 models and documents setup for 29 coding agents.
  • Requesty adds 5% to each top-up.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want the broadest catalog, free models, a relay with an independent track record, or Anthropic features such as the MCP connector, Skills, PDFs or thinking across turns. The product has just been renamed and refocused on Inworld's hosted models, so check that the third-party models you need are still listed before building on it. It fits consumer and voice apps that already use Inworld's speech APIs and want per-user model routing and A/B tests at list prices.
