What OpenCode Zen is

In one or two sentences, before anything else.

OpenCode Zen, called OpenCode Console in the docs since October 2026, is the pay-as-you-go model gateway from Anomaly Innovations, the team behind the OpenCode coding agent. It sells about 80 coding models near the makers' list prices plus a 4.6% + 0.31 USD card fee; a Console breach that month may have exposed some users' saved provider keys.

Main features

What it can do, one sentence each, and whether we actually tested it.

  • A short list of coding models

About 80 models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI, Moonshot, Z.ai, DeepSeek, Qwen, MiniMax and Mistral; OpenCode says it tested each model, worked with providers on serving it and benchmarked each model-provider pair.

OpenCode has not published those benchmark results; its public model list had 86 IDs on October 21, 2026, including one named test.

  • At-cost pricing plus a card fee

A processing fee of 4.6% + 0.31 USD is added to each credit purchase; OpenCode says it sells at cost with markup only to cover processing fees.

Several listed prices differ from the makers' current prices, both above and below (see the price table).

  • Four API formats

OpenAI Chat Completions, OpenAI Responses, Anthropic Messages and Gemini generateContent at https://opencode.ai/inference; each model is served in one API family.

    Per OpenCode's inference API docs.

  • Guides for other agents

Setup guides for Claude Code (Claude and most Qwen models), Codex (GPT, Grok and Muse Spark), and Hermes, Pi and Raycast (all models); OpenCode itself connects with /connect.

Per OpenCode's harness docs, which say support for every model in every harness is coming.

  • Console MCP server

An MCP server at https://opencode.ai/console/mcp lets MCP-capable agents such as Claude Code and Codex manage your Console workspace after a browser sign-in.

Per OpenCode's harness docs; they do not list the server's tools.

  • Hosted web search

Workspace owners can turn on web search for OpenCode v2 users at 0.01 USD per successful search, with up to eight results per query.

Per OpenCode's web search docs, which say neither Console nor its search provider stores queries.

  • Budgets and no negative balance

Monthly budgets per workspace and per member, optional auto top-up, and a balance that never goes below zero: paid requests stop with HTTP 402.

One GitHub user found an inherited 5 USD budget blocked requests with 4.95 USD still in the balance.

  • Free models for a limited time

14 free entries in the price table, such as Big Pickle, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash Free, GLM-5.3-Flash Free and MiniMax M3.1 Flash Free.

Per OpenCode's docs, some free models may use your data to improve the model and NVIDIA trial endpoints log use.

Who it is for

The people it helps and the problems it solves, and where it ranks.

Built for

  • OpenCode users who want one prepaid balance for closed and open coding models
  • Claude Code, Codex, Pi or Hermes users who want a second source for the same models
  • Developers who pay by Alipay, WeChat Pay or UPI rather than an international card
  • Small teams that want to share models with monthly budgets per member

Problems it solves

  • Picking, among many hosts, one that serves a coding model correctly
  • Separate accounts and bills for Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and open-model providers
  • Card-only payment at most model makers
  • Runaway spend from coding agents without a monthly cap

Graded in

What it is good at

Public tests other people ran: what they gave it and how it did.

  1. Case 1

Per OpenCode's Claude Code harness guide: running Claude Code on Console credits

    Input

ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://opencode.ai/inference/anthropic and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN set to an oc_sk_ key in ~/.claude/settings.json, with claude-opus-5-5, claude-sonnet-5-5 and claude-haiku-5-5 as the default models.

    What happened

Claude Code then bills the Console balance at Anthropic's list prices plus the card fee. Only Claude and most Qwen models are reachable this way; GPT, Gemini and most open models are not available in Claude Code yet.

  2. Case 2

In OpenCode GitHub issue #35475 (July 2026): long-context calls stopped by a content filter

    Input

Three Claude Fable 5 requests on a 535,000-token context.

    What happened

Each stopped after one to five output tokens but was billed about 6.69 USD for cache writes, about 20 USD in total. The user says no refund or root cause was given. One user's report.

  3. Case 3

Per OpenCode's web search docs: hosted search inside OpenCode v2

    Input

Find the latest Bun release and summarize the changes with source links.

    What happened

Once an owner enables hosted search, OpenCode runs the search through the Console for 0.01 USD per successful search and cites up to eight results; failed and rate-limited searches are not charged.

Where it falls short

What it does badly, with the evidence, and what we could not settle.

Weak

Weak

  • A Console breach in October 2026.

Evidence: OpenCode said on October 17, 2026 that an intruder reached a legacy system the night before and may have exposed third-party provider keys saved in Console workspaces, affecting 1.4% of Console users. Users reported unauthorised charges on their own provider accounts, such as about 281 USD on OpenAI and 168 USD on Anthropic (The Hacker News, October 19, 2026).

  • Billing problems and slow support.

Evidence: GitHub issues #51562 and #52186 (September 2026) report paid top-ups never credited; #33318 reports free-tier limits hitting a paid balance; #29182 reports a Go checkout charging the Zen balance. Billing support is by email only, and many issues were closed by bots or after the 2.0 release.

  • "Zero markup" is not exact.

Evidence: Gemini 3.8 Flash is listed at 1.50 / 7.50 USD per million tokens against Google's 0.75 / 3.75 USD until December 31, 2026; Claude Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol cache reads are 0.20 USD against the makers' 0.10 USD.

  • Each agent reaches only part of the catalog.

Evidence: Per OpenCode's harness docs, Claude Code can use Claude and most Qwen models, and Codex can use GPT, Grok and Muse Spark models.

  • The fee weighs more on small top-ups.

    Evidence: 4.6% + 0.31 USD is 0.77 USD on a 10 USD top-up (7.7%) and 1.23 USD on 20 USD (6.2%).

  • Not for anyone who needs dependable billing support, image or video models, or control over which provider serves a model.

Evidence: The billing reports above, a text-only model list, and no user-facing provider choice in the docs.

Uncertain

Uncertain

  • What else the breach touched.

Why unsure: As of October 19, 2026 OpenCode had not said what the legacy system was, how it was reached, or whether Console credits, payment data or prompts were involved, and no post-mortem had been published.

  • Where the models run.

Why unsure: The Zen landing page says all models are hosted in the US; the docs say the US and the EU.

  • Free-tier limits.

Why unsure: Users report daily caps on free models whose accounting is not documented; a feature request for clearer limits (#57540) is open.

  • A claimed cross-session leak on a free model.

Why unsure: A user claimed in April 2026 that another user's session streamed into theirs on the free MiMo V2 Pro model; the leaked text includes a made-up biography, so a model hallucination cannot be ruled out, and no response from OpenCode was found.

Common questions

Answer first, then why, an example, the limits and what to do next.

Is OpenCode Zen the same as OpenCode Console?

OpenCode Zen and OpenCode Console are the same pay-as-you-go service under two names. The docs switched to Console with OpenCode 2.0 on October 14, 2026, while the landing page at opencode.ai/zen still says Zen. A GitHub issue from October 2026 counts four names for the same products across the CLI, desktop app, docs and site.

Is OpenCode Zen cheaper than the official API?

OpenCode Zen costs about the same as the official APIs for most models, plus a card fee of 4.6% + 0.31 USD per top-up. Claude Opus 5.5 is 4 / 20 USD per million tokens on both. GPT-5.1 is cheaper at 1.07 / 8.50 USD against 1.25 / 10, while Gemini 3.8 Flash costs double Google's current 0.75 / 3.75 USD.

Was OpenCode Console hacked?

OpenCode confirmed on October 17, 2026 that an intruder reached a legacy Console system and may have exposed provider keys saved by 1.4% of Console users. Affected users were emailed to revoke and replace those keys; OpenCode says keys kept in the CLI or desktop app were not involved, and it linked the incident to a large-scale distillation attack.

Next step

If you saved OpenAI, Anthropic or Google keys in the Console, revoke them at the provider and check usage from October 16 onward.

Is OpenCode Zen safe to use?

OpenCode Zen is run by a known open-source team, but its October 2026 breach and repeated billing complaints call for caution. Paid models run on providers that keep no data, except OpenAI and Anthropic, which keep requests 30 days. Trustpilot shows 2.6 out of 5 from 16 reviews.

OpenCode Zen vs OpenCode Go: what is the difference?

OpenCode Zen is pay-as-you-go credits for about 80 models, while OpenCode Go is a 10 or 40 USD monthly subscription for open and low-cost models. Go has usage limits and is for single-member workspaces; Hacker News commenters in October 2026 were split on whether it is good value.

Does OpenCode Zen support MCP?

OpenCode documents a Console MCP server for managing your workspace, but its inference API has no MCP features. Claude Code and Codex can add it with one command and sign in from the browser; OpenCode itself is an MCP client for other servers.

OpenCode Zen vs OpenRouter: which is better?

OpenRouter has far more models and routing control, while OpenCode Zen offers a short coding list that accepts Alipay and WeChat Pay. OpenRouter adds 5.5% to purchases and lets you pick hosts; Zen adds 4.6% + 0.31 USD and chooses the host for you.

What the public tests show

This page is built from OpenCode's own Zen landing page, docs, status page and public model list, the makers' price pages, GitHub issues, Trustpilot, Hacker News, a Kingy AI review, a competitor's comparison and news reports on the October 2026 breach, all checked on October 21, 2026. OpenCode's claims are labelled as its own.

What OpenCode Zen sells

OpenCode Zen is the paid model service of Anomaly Innovations, the former SST team that makes the open-source OpenCode coding agent. The landing page calls it a curated set of models "tested and benchmarked for coding agents". Since OpenCode 2.0 on October 14, 2026, the docs call it the Console, alongside workspaces, budgets, provider connections and the OpenCode Go subscriptions (10 and 40 USD a month).

The price table lists about 70 paid and 14 free models: Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok, Kimi, GLM, DeepSeek, Qwen, MiniMax and Mistral. OpenCode says it tested each model, worked with providers to serve it correctly and benchmarked each model-provider pair, but it does not publish those results or let you choose the provider. Payment is by card, Link, Alipay, UPI or WeChat Pay through Stripe (billing docs).

Prices against the official APIs

OpenCode says Zen charges per request "with zero markups" and adds a processing fee of 4.6% + 0.31 USD to each credit purchase: 0.77 USD on 10 USD and 1.23 USD on 20 USD. Most prices match the makers', with exceptions:

Model, per million input / output tokensOpenCode ZenMaker's list price
Claude Opus 5.54 / 20 USD4 / 20 USD (Anthropic)
Claude Sonnet 5.5, cache read0.20 USD0.10 USD (Anthropic)
GPT-5.11.07 / 8.50 USD1.25 / 10 USD (OpenAI)
Gemini 3.8 Flash1.50 / 7.50 USD0.75 / 3.75 USD through December 31, 2026, then 1.50 / 7.50 USD (Google)
DeepSeek V4.1 Flash0.30 / 1.20 USD0.30 / 1.20 USD at peak hours, half off-peak (DeepSeek)

Gemini 3.8 Flash on Zen is already at the price Google will charge from January 2027. GPT-6.1 Sol cache reads are also 0.20 USD against OpenAI's 0.10 USD. Refunds are possible within 14 days if the credits from that charge are unused.

The October 2026 Console breach

On October 17, 2026 OpenCode said an intruder had reached "a legacy system" the night before and that third-party provider keys saved in Console workspaces may have been exposed, affecting 1.4% of Console users, all with an outside provider linked (Infosecurity Magazine). Co-founder Dax Raad said the breach involved "the OpenCode Console, not OpenCode itself", and that keys stored by the CLI and desktop apps stay on the user's machine. OpenCode linked it to a large-scale distillation attack and told affected users to revoke and replace their keys. The Hacker News reported users' own claims of unauthorised charges, such as about 281 USD on OpenAI and 168 USD on Anthropic for one user and 1,700 USD for another. By October 19 OpenCode had not said how the system was reached or whether credits, payment data or prompts were involved.

What public tests show

No independent latency, uptime or quality test of Zen has been published. OpenCode's own status page shows live time to first token and throughput per product; on October 21, 2026 pay-as-you-go read about 1.7 to 2.4 seconds to first token, while free inference was degraded by an upstream provider issue. A Kingy AI review (August 2026, updated October 2026) did not run paid inference through Zen. Kilo, a competitor, compares Zen's no-markup pricing and 1.23 USD fee with its own gateway.

What users report

GitHub issues describe paid top-ups that never reached the balance (#51562, #52186, September 2026), a "Free usage exceeded" error on a paid balance (#33318), Go checkouts charged to the Zen balance (#29182), and three Claude Fable 5 calls cut off by a content filter but billed about 20 USD in cache writes (#35475). Billing support is by email only, and many issues were closed by bots or when OpenCode 1.x issues were closed after 2.0. Trustpilot shows 2.6 out of 5 from 16 reviews, mostly about Go limits, bans and refunds. In the OpenCode 2.0 thread on Hacker News, commenters split on whether Go is the best deal or the worst open-model subscription.

MCP, Agent Skills and coding agents

  • MCP: OpenCode documents a Console MCP server at https://opencode.ai/console/mcp, using OAuth with dynamic client registration, so harnesses with MCP support can manage your workspace. The Claude Code and Codex guides show one-line setup; the docs do not list its tools. The inference API has no MCP features. OpenCode itself is an MCP client.
  • Agent Skills: no official skills appear in its docs or the anomalyco GitHub organisation. The OpenCode agent loads SKILL.md skills; Anthropic's Skills API is not documented for the Anthropic endpoint.
  • Coding agents: Claude Code reaches Claude and most Qwen models, Codex reaches GPT, Grok and Muse Spark, and Hermes, Pi and Raycast reach every model. Kilo Gateway accepts an OpenCode Go subscription as a bring-your-own-key option.
  • API formats: OpenAI Chat Completions, OpenAI Responses, Anthropic Messages and Gemini generateContent (inference docs), with a session header for consistent routing and prompt caching, and hosted web search at 0.01 USD per search. The docs map each model to an AI SDK package, and an llms.txt indexes the v2 docs.

Privacy, terms and who runs it

OpenCode says its providers keep no data and do not train on it, except listed free models; OpenAI and Anthropic keep requests 30 days under their own policies. The landing page says models are hosted in the US, the docs say the US and EU. Workspaces can connect their own Anthropic, OpenAI, Bedrock, Vertex, Azure or OpenRouter accounts through the Console (providers docs); those saved keys were what the October breach may have exposed. Budgets cap monthly spend per workspace and member (budgets docs).

How it compares with OpenRouter, Kilo Gateway and Requesty

  • OpenRouter lists far more models, lets you pick hosts and adds 5.5% to purchases; its free models allow 50 requests a day.
  • Kilo Gateway adds 5% to purchases and offers only a Chat Completions endpoint.
  • Requesty adds 5% to top-ups and has an EU endpoint.

Who should skip it

Skip OpenCode Zen if you need responsive billing support, image or video models, or control over which provider serves a model. Until OpenCode explains the October breach, avoid saving your own provider keys in the Console.
