What Cloudflare AI Gateway is

In one or two sentences, before anything else.

Cloudflare AI Gateway is Cloudflare's free proxy for AI requests, adding logging, caching, rate limits and fallbacks in front of 24 providers. Since August 2025 its Unified Billing lets you buy Cloudflare credits and call OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI and Groq models without your own keys, at list prices plus a 5% fee on every credit purchase.

Main features

What it can do, one sentence each, and whether we actually tested it.

  • Free gateway controls

Logs, analytics, response caching (up to one month), rate limits, spend limits, retries, model fallbacks, DLP scanning and guardrails in front of 24 providers, on every Cloudflare plan.

Per Cloudflare's pricing docs; guardrails are billed as Workers AI inference and log storage is capped by plan.

  • Unified Billing credits

Buy Cloudflare credits and call OpenAI, Anthropic, Google AI Studio, Vertex AI, xAI and Groq over HTTP, or any catalog model through the AI binding, without your own keys. Inference is billed at list price.

A 5% fee applies to every credit purchase, and requests on Cloudflare's credentials are capped at 200 per 60 seconds per gateway.

  • Your own keys at no charge

Provider keys can be sent with each request or stored in Secrets Store; the gateway tries a request key, then a stored key, then Unified Billing.

A 'Require provider credentials' setting blocks the fall-through to paid credits.

  • Dynamic Routes

If/else rules and percentage traffic splits between models, set up in the dashboard.

Model-first routing, where the gateway picks the provider, was announced in August 2026 as coming later.

  • One API for Workers AI and other providers

Since August 7, 2026 one REST API covers /ai/run for all modalities and /ai/v1/chat/completions, /ai/v1/responses and /ai/v1/messages in OpenAI and Anthropic formats.

Per Cloudflare's blog and REST API docs.

  • Coding agent guides

Setup guides for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, OpenAI Codex, OpenCode, Pi, VS Code and Xcode.

No guide for Cline, Roo Code or Kilo Code.

  • Official Agent Skills

The cloudflare/skills repo's main skill includes an AI Gateway reference, and installs as a plugin for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and VS Code with the Cloudflare MCP server.

The older AI Gateway MCP server for searching logs is marked deprecated in favour of the Cloudflare API MCP server.

Who it is for

The people it helps and the problems it solves, and where it ranks.

Built for

  • Teams already building on Cloudflare Workers or Workers AI
  • Developers who want logs, caching and spend limits in front of their own OpenAI or Anthropic keys
  • Small apps that want one Cloudflare bill for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI models
  • Developers routing Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode through a company-controlled gateway

Problems it solves

  • No visibility into what each app or developer sends to AI providers
  • Repeated identical requests paid for again and again
  • Runaway spend with no per-model or per-key limit
  • Separate provider accounts just to try a few frontier models

Graded in

What it is good at

Public tests other people ran: what they gave it and how it did.

  1. Case 1

In ComputeSDK's open gateway benchmark (October 16, 2026): latency added over direct calls

    Input

100 requests each to Claude Haiku 4.5, gpt-5.4-mini and gemini-3.6-flash from Northern Virginia, through Cloudflare's provider passthrough route with a provider key, and straight to the providers.

    What happened

Median time to first token was 544 ms through Cloudflare against 394 ms direct on Claude Haiku 4.5, and 520 ms against 412 ms on gpt-5.4-mini; every request succeeded. One US East location, and Unified Billing was not part of the run.

  2. Case 2

In Edgee's benchmark of six gateways (August 2026, a competitor's test): latency from 43 regions

    Input

16,344 time-to-first-token measurements from 43 Google Cloud regions on claude-sonnet-4-6 and gpt-5.4, with direct OpenAI and Anthropic calls as the baseline.

    What happened

Cloudflare added 26 ms on Claude and 37 ms on GPT, the lowest and second lowest of the six. Run by a competing gateway over two days, and its result differs from ComputeSDK's US East run.

  3. Case 3

In Kalvium Labs' write-up of client production systems (April 2026): caching and overhead

    Input

Production chat apps that called OpenAI through Cloudflare AI Gateway instead of directly, with gateway caching on.

    What happened

Kalvium reports 20 to 60 ms added per request and cache hit rates usually under 5% for conversational traffic, so it recommends the gateway mainly for cost visibility. No method or sample is given.

  4. Case 4

Per Cloudflare's Claude Code guide: routing Claude Code through a gateway

    Input

ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://gateway.ai.cloudflare.com/v1/<ACCOUNT_ID>/<GATEWAY_ID>/anthropic, with the gateway token sent in a cf-aig-authorization header through ANTHROPIC_CUSTOM_HEADERS.

    What happened

Requests are logged and cached in the gateway and can be paid with Unified Billing credits or your own Anthropic key. On Cloudflare's credentials the 200-requests-per-minute cap per gateway applies.

Where it falls short

What it does badly, with the evidence, and what we could not settle.

Weak

Weak

  • A 5% fee on every credit purchase.

Evidence: Cloudflare's Unified Billing docs: 'A 5% fee is applied to all credits purchased.' Vercel AI Gateway charges no fee on credits.

  • A low request cap on Cloudflare's credentials.

Evidence: Cloudflare's limits page: 200 requests per 60 seconds per gateway for Unified Billing, returning 429 above that. It does not apply to your own keys.

  • Users report paid credits that do not work.

Evidence: Cloudflare Community threads: error 2021 on all third-party models with funded credits, 402 on gpt-image-2 with 10 USD prepaid, a balance that did not move for over seven days after more than 1,000 USD paid, and top-ups declined on every card and PayPal.

  • Billing support is hard to reach on the free plan.

Evidence: Forum users on the free plan say 'Submit a case' led to an error page and that urgent billing cases went unanswered.

  • Prompts are logged by default.

Evidence: Request and response logging is on unless you turn it off per gateway; zero data retention covers only Unified Billing on Cloudflare's credentials and does not change gateway logging.

  • Not for high-volume apps on Cloudflare's credits, or buyers chasing the lowest price.

Evidence: The 200-requests-per-minute cap per gateway and the 5% purchase fee both work against them; such teams are better served by their own provider accounts or a no-fee relay.

Uncertain

Uncertain

  • When the forum complaints were posted and whether they were fixed.

Why unsure: The Cloudflare Community forum blocks automated reading, so the threads' dates and any staff replies could not be checked.

  • Minimum purchase, refunds and credit expiry.

Why unsure: The Unified Billing and pricing docs state none of them.

  • Whether Unified Billing is still a beta.

Why unsure: It launched in closed beta in August 2025; the docs page updated September 30, 2026 says neither way.

  • How the November 18, 2025 Cloudflare outage hit AI Gateway.

Why unsure: Reports describe widespread 5xx errors across Cloudflare's proxy but do not single out AI Gateway.

Common questions

Answer first, then why, an example, the limits and what to do next.

How much does Cloudflare AI Gateway cost?

Cloudflare AI Gateway itself is free on every Cloudflare plan; you pay only for the models. With your own provider keys you pay the provider directly. With Unified Billing you pay the provider's list price from Cloudflare credits, plus a 5% fee when you buy the credits.

Limits

Log storage is capped by plan, and guardrails are billed as Workers AI inference.

Is Cloudflare AI Gateway cheaper than the official APIs?

Cloudflare AI Gateway's Unified Billing costs about 5% more than paying the model makers directly. Its catalog lists Claude Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6 Sol and Gemini 4 Argon at the makers' 2 / 10 USD per million tokens, and the 5% fee on credit purchases is added on top.

Why

Response caching can lower the bill for repeated identical requests, but a production write-up by Kalvium Labs puts conversational cache hit rates under 5%.

What is Cloudflare AI Gateway Unified Billing?

Unified Billing is Cloudflare's prepaid credit system that pays model makers for you, so you can call their models without your own keys. Over HTTP it covers OpenAI, Anthropic, Google AI Studio, Vertex AI, xAI and Groq, and through the Workers AI binding any model in Cloudflare's catalog.

Limits

Requests on Cloudflare's credentials are capped at 200 per 60 seconds per gateway, and forum users report funded credits failing with errors 2021 and 402.

Is Cloudflare AI Gateway safe to use?

Cloudflare AI Gateway is run by a large listed US company, but it logs prompts and responses by default. Turn logging off per gateway if you do not want Cloudflare to store them; zero data retention routing covers only Unified Billing requests and does not change logging.

Next step

Store provider keys in Secrets Store rather than in client code.

Cloudflare AI Gateway vs OpenRouter vs Vercel AI Gateway: which should I use?

Cloudflare AI Gateway fits teams on Cloudflare that want free controls in front of their own keys; OpenRouter and Vercel AI Gateway are broader relays. On credits, Cloudflare adds 5% and caps requests at 200 a minute per gateway, OpenRouter adds 5.5% on its Standard plan, and Vercel adds no fee.

Does Cloudflare AI Gateway support MCP?

Cloudflare AI Gateway has no current MCP server of its own; its earlier log-search MCP server is marked deprecated. Cloudflare's official Cloudflare API MCP server covers its whole API and docs, and its official cloudflare/skills repo includes AI Gateway guidance for coding agents.

Limits

Passing MCP servers to models through the gateway is not documented.

Can I use Cloudflare AI Gateway with Claude Code or OpenCode?

Cloudflare AI Gateway has official setup guides for Claude Code, OpenCode and eight other coding tools. For Claude Code you point ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL at your gateway's /anthropic path and send a gateway token in a cf-aig-authorization header, paying with Unified Billing credits or your own Anthropic key.

What the public tests show

This page is built from Cloudflare's AI Gateway docs, model catalog, blog posts and status history, two public latency benchmarks, two write-ups by teams that use or studied it, a competitor's comparison page and user reports on the Cloudflare Community forum, all checked on October 21, 2026. Cloudflare's claims are labelled as its own.

What Cloudflare AI Gateway sells

Cloudflare AI Gateway started in September 2023 as a proxy in front of AI providers: you keep your own provider keys, send requests through a gateway URL, and get logs, analytics, response caching, rate limits, spend limits, retries and model fallbacks. These features are free on every Cloudflare plan. It supports 24 providers this way, from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google to Groq, Mistral, ElevenLabs, Replicate and OpenRouter.

The relay part is newer. Unified Billing, launched in closed beta on August 27, 2025, lets you buy Cloudflare credits and call models without your own keys. Over the HTTP API it covers OpenAI, Anthropic, Google AI Studio, Google Vertex AI, xAI and Groq; through the Workers AI binding it reaches any model in Cloudflare's catalog, which lists 262 models including Veo, Seedance and Flux. On August 7, 2026 Cloudflare merged Workers AI and AI Gateway into one binding, one /ai/ endpoint and one credit wallet.

Prices against the official APIs

Cloudflare's Unified Billing docs say inference is passed through with no markup, and that "a 5% fee is applied to all credits purchased". So 100 USD of credits costs 105 USD, and every model ends up about 5% dearer than at its maker:

Model, per million input / output tokensCloudflare catalogWith the 5% credit feeOfficial priceOfficial source
Claude Sonnet 5.52 / 10 USD2.10 / 10.50 USD2 / 10 USDAnthropic
GPT-6 Sol2 / 10 USD2.10 / 10.50 USD2 / 10 USDOpenAI
Gemini 4 Argon2 / 10 USD2.10 / 10.50 USD2 / 10 USD until November 30, 2026; 4 / 20 USD from December 1Google

Catalog prices come from Cloudflare's pages for Claude Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6 Sol and Gemini 4 Argon; the middle column is arithmetic from the 5% fee. With your own keys you pay the provider and Cloudflare charges nothing for routing.

Two billing details matter. The balance can go below zero "in rare instances", and Cloudflare then charges the card on file at the start of the next month. The docs state no minimum purchase, credit expiry or refund policy.

Limits that matter for a relay

  • Unified Billing requests are capped at 200 per 60 seconds per gateway when Cloudflare's credentials are used; above that the gateway returns 429. The cap does not apply to your own keys. Free accounts can create 10 gateways and paid accounts 20.
  • Logging of prompts and responses is on by default. Accounts with older gateways keep 100,000 logs in total on the free plan and 10 million per gateway on paid plans; accounts whose first gateway was created on or after September 24, 2026 follow Workers Logs limits.
  • A "Require provider credentials" setting stops third-party requests from falling through to paid credits.

What public tests show

  • ComputeSDK (a sandbox SDK company that does not sell a gateway) published an open benchmark on October 16, 2026, calling Cloudflare's passthrough route with a provider key, not Unified Billing. Over 100 requests each from Northern Virginia, median time to first token was 544 ms through Cloudflare against 394 ms direct on Claude Haiku 4.5 (Vercel: 462 ms), and 520 ms against 412 ms on gpt-5.4-mini. Every request succeeded. In that run Cloudflare added more delay than Vercel or OpenRouter.
  • Edgee, a competing gateway, ran a competitor's benchmark from 43 Google Cloud regions in August 2026. Cloudflare had the lowest overhead of six gateways on Claude (26 ms on claude-sonnet-4-6) and the second lowest on gpt-5.4 (37 ms). The two tests disagree, which suggests the added delay depends on where you call from.
  • Kalvium Labs, an AI engineering firm, wrote in April 2026 from client production systems that the gateway adds 20 to 60 ms depending on the distance to the nearest Cloudflare location, and that conversational cache hit rates are usually under 5%. It gives no method or sample.
  • NxCode noted in an August 2026 desk analysis that paying with gateway credits raises Workers AI limits to 50 requests a minute for Kimi K2.6, Kimi K2.7 Code and GLM-5.2, from 20.

What users report

Cloudflare Community threads describe Unified Billing failures. One user says every third-party model request was rejected with error 2021 "Invalid User Credentials" while Cloudflare-hosted models worked. Another, with 10 USD prepaid and no own keys, got HTTP 402 on openai/gpt-image-2 while google/nano-banana-2 worked on the same gateway; a later thread reports 402 and 503 errors on OpenAI. One user says they paid over 1,000 USD and the balance did not move for more than seven days while an urgent case went unanswered. Others report top-ups failing with every card and PayPal, and a "Submit a case" link that led to an error page on the free plan. The forum blocks automated reading, so these threads' dates and any staff replies could not be checked.

MCP, Agent Skills and coding agents

Cloudflare runs several official MCP servers, including the Cloudflare API server (mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp), which covers its whole API and searches the docs. The separate AI Gateway MCP server, which searched gateway logs and showed prompts and responses, is listed as deprecated in Cloudflare's GitHub repo, with users told to move to the Cloudflare API server. The gateway's REST API docs do not mention passing MCP servers to models.

Cloudflare publishes official Agent Skills in its cloudflare/skills repo. The main cloudflare skill has an AI Gateway reference on configuration, SDK integration, billing and dynamic routing, and the repo installs as a plugin for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and VS Code together with the Cloudflare MCP server. Anthropic's Skills API through the gateway is not documented.

There are setup guides for ten coding tools: Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, OpenAI Codex, OpenCode, Pi, VS Code and Xcode. Cline, Roo Code and Kilo Code have none. The REST API offers /ai/run for every model and modality, plus /ai/v1/chat/completions, /ai/v1/responses and /ai/v1/messages in OpenAI and Anthropic formats; provider-native URLs pass requests through unchanged. Cloudflare's own skill says the older unified /compat API is deprecated for single-model calls but still needed for dynamic routes. Cloudflare maintains ai-gateway-provider and workers-ai-provider for the Vercel AI SDK, and its docs publish an llms.txt.

Privacy, terms and who runs it

Cloudflare, Inc. is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and based in San Francisco. Logging can be turned off per gateway. Zero data retention routing exists only for Unified Billing requests on Cloudflare's credentials, and Cloudflare says it does not change gateway logging. Keys can be kept in Secrets Store, and DLP scanning and Llama Guard guardrails are available. Cloudflare publishes no AI Gateway uptime figure. On November 18, 2025 a network-wide Cloudflare outage caused widespread 5xx errors from 11:20 UTC until most traffic recovered around 14:30; the sources found do not say how AI Gateway itself was affected.

How it compares with Vercel, OpenRouter, Requesty and Eden AI

  • Vercel AI Gateway charges no fee on credits and has no Vercel rate limit on paid credits, but even BYOK needs a positive credit balance there.
  • OpenRouter adds 5.5% to credit purchases on its Standard plan and lists far more open-weight hosts.
  • Requesty adds 5% to each top-up, the same as Cloudflare.
  • Eden AI adds 5.5% and sells OCR, speech and translation APIs as well.

Who should skip it

Skip Unified Billing if you need more than 200 requests a minute per gateway on Cloudflare's credits, if a billing failure without a support channel you can reach would hurt, or if you want the lowest price: the 5% fee makes every model dearer than at its maker or at a no-fee relay. As a free logging, caching and limits layer in front of your own keys, especially for teams already on Workers, it is easy to justify.
