What Eden AI is

In one or two sentences, before anything else.

Eden AI is a Lyon-based API gateway, run by Eden AI SAS, that puts about 500 language models and 250 'expert' models for OCR, speech, translation and image work behind one key and one prepaid balance. It passes provider prices through and, since January 2026, adds a 5.5% platform fee on self-serve credits.

Main features

What it can do, one sentence each, and whether we actually tested it.

  • LLMs at provider prices

An OpenAI-compatible endpoint for Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok, Mistral, DeepSeek and Qwen models, priced at the makers' list prices.

Eden AI's claim; its listed prices for Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol and Gemini 4 Argon matched the makers' on October 21, 2026. A 5.5% platform fee comes on top.

  • Expert models

OCR, invoice, ID and resume parsing, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, translation, image analysis, web search and video generation from many providers through /v3/universal-ai.

Eden AI's catalog; the models page counts 250+ expert models.

  • EU-only endpoint

api.eu.edenai.run routes only to EU-eligible providers and refuses non-EU models with HTTP 451, without billing them.

Per Eden AI's routing docs; most models on offer are American or Chinese, so the EU list is shorter.

  • Fallbacks billed once

A fallbacks list of up to 7 LLMs or 3 expert models plus automatic provider failover, at most 8 attempts per request, billed only for the attempt that answers.

Can be turned off with routing.allow_fallbacks=false.

  • Bring your own keys

Use your own OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and other provider keys; the BYOK doc says those requests are billed by the provider.

Requires 'a plan that includes BYOK'; whether any Eden AI fee applies is not stated.

  • Official MCP server

A hosted MCP server at mcp.edenai.run/mcp exposes the expert models as tools (ocr, web_search, image_generation, translation and more) for Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cline, OpenCode and other clients.

Each tool call is billed as a normal Eden AI call.

  • Official Agent Skill

edenai/edenai-skill on GitHub teaches Claude Code and other agents to use Eden AI for LLM chat, OCR, speech, web search, its MCP server and account tasks.

Published by Eden AI in April 2026; installs with the skills CLI or git clone.

  • Sandbox tokens

Test tokens that let you build an integration without real provider calls and at no cost.

Per Eden AI's docs; there are no free credits for real calls.

Who it is for

The people it helps and the problems it solves, and where it ranks.

Built for

  • EU companies that need a DPA and EU-only processing for AI calls
  • Teams that need OCR, document parsing, speech or translation alongside LLMs
  • Developers comparing several OCR or speech providers on their own documents
  • Agent builders who want document reading and web search as MCP tools

Problems it solves

  • Separate contracts and invoices for each AI provider
  • No simple way to keep AI requests inside the EU
  • Text-only models that cannot read scanned documents
  • Rewriting integrations to switch OCR or speech vendors

What it is good at

Public tests other people ran: what they gave it and how it did.

  1. Case 1

Per Eden AI's Claude Code guide: Claude Code on Eden AI with its MCP tools

    Input

ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.edenai.run/v3, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=<Eden AI key>, ANTHROPIC_MODEL=anthropic/claude-opus-latest, then claude mcp add --transport http edenai https://mcp.edenai.run/mcp with the key as a Bearer header.

    What happened

One key then serves Claude Code's model and its OCR and web search tools, and the model can be switched to openai/gpt-latest. The 5.5% fee applies, and no public report describes how Claude Code behaves with non-Anthropic models here.

  2. Case 2

Per Eden AI's MCP server docs: a text-only model reading a scanned invoice

    Input

An agent loop that gives a function-calling LLM the server's tools; the model asks for ocr on an uploaded invoice, the loop runs it on the MCP server and returns the text.

    What happened

Eden AI documents this as a way to make a text-only model multimodal by composition. Each OCR call is billed as an expert model call, and long-running tools return a job to poll with check_job.

  3. Case 3

Per Eden AI's routing docs: keeping requests inside the EU

    Input

A chat completion sent to api.eu.edenai.run for a model that has no EU-eligible provider.

    What happened

Eden AI says the request is refused with HTTP 451 and not billed, while EU-eligible models are routed only to EU providers. Hacker News commenters noted that most models on offer are American or Chinese.

  4. Case 4

In a Hacker News thread (April 26, 2026): one user's first week

    Input

Day-to-day API use of Eden AI for about a week by the user who submitted the thread.

    What happened

The user said it was 'working fine' and valued the European models and pay-as-you-go billing. One short anecdote with no measurements.

Where it falls short

What it does badly, with the evidence, and what we could not settle.

Weak

Weak

  • A 5.5% fee on top of list prices.

Evidence: Eden AI's plan docs: 5.5% platform fee on the self-serve plan, added between January 19 and 27, 2026 according to a PricingSaaS capture. Its own comparison post says the fee applies on usage, its docs say at checkout.

  • Payments are non-refundable.

Evidence: Eden AI's terms: 'Unless otherwise stated, payments are non-refundable.'

  • A low default rate limit.

Evidence: Rate-limit docs: 10 requests per second shared across keys on self-serve; another plan page says 7, upgradable to 15. More on request through live chat.

  • Its own pages disagree.

Evidence: Model counts of 500+, 750+ and about 1,000 on different pages; fee timing and rate limits also differ between pages.

  • Little independent evidence.

Evidence: No third-party benchmark has been published; Trustpilot (2.3 from 7 reviews) mixes in an unrelated app, Product Hunt reviews are mostly from 2023, and G2 has one review.

  • Not for anyone chasing the cheapest tokens or needing high request rates on day one.

Evidence: The 5.5% fee makes every model dearer than at its maker or at a no-fee relay, refunds are not offered, and the default limit is 10 requests per second.

Uncertain

Uncertain

  • Minimum top-up and credit expiry.

Why unsure: The pricing, plans and buying-credits pages state no minimum; only the AWS Marketplace listing says credits do not expire.

  • Fees on BYOK requests.

Why unsure: The BYOK doc mentions no Eden AI fee but does not say which plans include BYOK.

  • A minimum fee per purchase.

Why unsure: A third-party listing mentions a 0.80 USD minimum platform fee that does not appear in Eden AI's own docs.

  • Security certifications.

Why unsure: The site claims SOC 2 and ISO 27001; no auditor report or trust portal was found to confirm them.

Common questions

Answer first, then why, an example, the limits and what to do next.

Is Eden AI free?

Eden AI has no free tier or free credits on its pricing pages. You buy prepaid credits to make real calls; sandbox tokens let you build and test an integration without real provider calls, at no cost.

How much does Eden AI cost?

Eden AI charges the model makers' list prices plus a 5.5% platform fee on the self-serve plan. There is no subscription; the Advanced AI Platform adds custom pricing, volume discounts and invoicing.

Limits

Its pages describe the fee both as charged at checkout and as charged on usage, and payments are non-refundable unless otherwise stated.

Is Eden AI cheaper than the official APIs?

Eden AI costs about 5.5% more than the official APIs for the same model. Its catalog lists Claude Sonnet 5.5 at 2 / 10 USD and Claude Opus 5.5 at 4 / 20 USD per million tokens, Anthropic's own prices, and the platform fee comes on top.

Eden AI vs OpenRouter: which should I use?

Eden AI and OpenRouter charge the same 5.5% fee on credits; Eden AI adds expert models and an EU-only endpoint, OpenRouter adds more open-weight hosts and free models. Pick Eden AI if you need OCR, speech or translation or EU-only routing, OpenRouter for the broadest LLM choice.

Is Eden AI legit and safe?

Eden AI is a registered French company with public terms, a DPA and venture investors, but independent reviews of its gateway are few. It says it does not store prompts by default or train on customer data; Trustpilot's 2.3 score mixes in reviews of an unrelated app.

Limits

Payments are non-refundable unless otherwise stated, and its SOC 2 and ISO 27001 claims come without a public auditor report.

Does Eden AI support MCP?

Eden AI runs an official hosted MCP server that exposes its OCR, speech, translation and web search models as tools. It is at mcp.edenai.run/mcp, uses your API key as a Bearer token, bills each tool call as a normal call, and has setup guides for Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cline and OpenCode.

Next step

Eden AI also publishes an official Agent Skill, edenai/edenai-skill, for Claude Code and other agents.

What the public tests show

This page is built from Eden AI's website, pricing and model pages, docs and llms.txt, terms, status page and GitHub, Anthropic's, OpenAI's and Google's price pages, a pricing-change tracker, and user reports on Hacker News, Trustpilot, Product Hunt and G2, all checked on October 21, 2026. Eden AI's claims are labelled as its own.

What Eden AI sells

Eden AI started in 2021 as one API for many machine-learning services and now sells two things behind one key and one prepaid balance. The first is an LLM gateway: an OpenAI-compatible endpoint at api.edenai.run/v3 for models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Mistral, DeepSeek, Qwen and others, with ids such as anthropic/claude-sonnet-latest. The second is what it calls expert models: OCR, document and resume parsing, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, translation, image analysis, web search and video generation from many providers, through a separate /v3/universal-ai endpoint.

Its pages give different counts: about 1,000 models on the home page, 500+ in the docs, and 750+ (500+ language models plus 250+ expert models) on the models page.

A request can list fallbacks (up to 7 LLMs or 3 expert models) and fail over between providers of the same model, with at most 8 attempts, billed only for the one that answers. An EU endpoint, api.eu.edenai.run, sends requests only to EU-eligible providers and refuses others with HTTP 451, without billing them.

Prices against the official APIs

Eden AI says it passes provider prices through and adds a 5.5% platform fee on the self-serve plan. For the models checked, its catalog matched the makers:

Model, per million input / output tokensEden AIOfficial priceOfficial source
Claude Opus 5.54 / 20 USD4 / 20 USDAnthropic
Claude Sonnet 5.52 / 10 USD2 / 10 USDAnthropic
Claude Haiku 5.50.10 / 0.50 USD0.10 / 0.50 USD for prompts up to 100,000 tokensAnthropic
GPT-6.1 Sol2 / 10 USD2 / 10 USDOpenAI
Gemini 4 Argon2 / 10 USD2 / 10 USD until November 30, 2026; 4 / 20 USD from December 1Google

Eden AI's prices come from its models page. With the 5.5% fee, 100 USD of model usage costs 105.50 USD; on AWS Marketplace a 1,000 USD credit pack costs 1,055 USD.

The fee is new and described two ways. A PricingSaaS capture shows it was added between January 19 and 27, 2026; before that Eden AI earned its margin from suppliers. Eden AI's pricing and plan docs say the fee is applied at checkout when you buy credits, but its own OpenRouter comparison post says it applies only to actual API usage. The BYOK doc says requests on your own keys are billed by the provider and mentions no Eden fee, but BYOK needs "a plan that includes BYOK". There are no free credits; sandbox tokens let you test an integration without real provider calls, at no cost. The terms say payments are non-refundable unless otherwise stated.

What public tests show

No third-party benchmark of Eden AI's latency, routing or uptime has been published. What exists:

  • Hacker News user muzzy19, who submitted the April 26, 2026 thread, said after about a week of use that it was "working fine", and valued the European models and pay-as-you-go billing. No numbers.
  • An edX product manager wrote on Product Hunt, around 2023, that its text APIs worked well against forum spam. That predates the LLM gateway.
  • Eden AI's own blog compared six speech-to-text providers through its API on one audio file per use case, and warns that real projects need a representative sample.
  • A PromptZone article quotes 200 to 500 ms for basic queries from unnamed "community reports", with no method.
  • Eden AI's home page claims 99.99% uptime; its status page showed all systems operational and no incidents in the past seven days.

What users report

Eden AI reached the Hacker News front page on April 26, 2026 as "Eden AI - European Alternative to OpenRouter" (133 points, 69 comments). Commenters questioned the "European" label when most models on offer are American or Chinese, noted that OpenRouter also charges 5.5%, flagged a missing imprint and the non-refundable payment clause, and said the router itself offered no zero-retention agreement. Others said they would switch at similar prices and that one contract and one invoice was the real value. The terms page now names Eden AI SAS and its address.

Ratings are thin. Trustpilot shows 2.3 out of 5 from 7 reviews, but its one-star reviews either name a different product, an AI companion app, or do not say what they refer to. Product Hunt shows 5.0 from 21 reviews, mostly from 2023, and G2 has one review.

MCP, Agent Skills and coding agents

Eden AI runs an official hosted MCP server at mcp.edenai.run/mcp (Streamable HTTP, Bearer key). It publishes one tool per expert feature, such as ocr, web_search, image_generation and translation, plus upload_file, check_job and list_models. Each tool call is billed as a normal Eden AI call under the same rate limits and data rules. The docs show setup for Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cline, Continue, OpenCode, Hermes Agent and OpenClaw, and how to hand the tools to any function-calling model without an MCP client. Passing MCP servers to models through the LLM endpoints is not documented.

Eden AI also publishes an official Agent Skill, edenai/edenai-skill on GitHub, created in April 2026. It teaches Claude Code, and through the skills CLI agents such as Cursor, Codex and OpenCode, to use Eden AI for LLM chat, OCR, speech, web search, its MCP server and account tasks.

Coding agent guides cover Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cline, Continue, OpenCode, Kilo Code, Pi, Hermes Agent and OpenClaw; Cursor, Roo Code and Zed have none. For Claude Code you set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to https://api.edenai.run/v3 and ANTHROPIC_API_KEY to your Eden AI key, and can switch to models such as openai/gpt-latest.

The API covers OpenAI chat completions with streaming, tool calling, structured output, web search and prompt caching; the OpenAI Responses API; an Anthropic Messages pass-through with token counting; and the universal endpoint for expert models. There are guides for the OpenAI SDKs, LangChain, Pydantic AI and Haystack, a LiteLLM provider, an n8n node and an llms.txt.

Privacy, terms and who runs it

Eden AI SAS is registered in Lyon (RCS 829 046 473) with an address in Villeurbanne, France, and is led by co-founder and CEO Taha Zemmouri. It raised a 3 million EUR seed round led by Galion.exe in late 2024. Eden AI says prompts and outputs are not stored by default, log retention is opt-in per project, async results are kept seven days, and it does not train on customer data. A DPA is available, and the site claims SOC 2 and ISO 27001. Data may leave the EEA depending on the providers you choose, unless you use the EU endpoint. French law governs the terms, and liability is capped at fees paid in the previous 12 months. The self-serve rate limit is 10 requests per second across keys (another page says 7), raised on request.

How it compares with OpenRouter, Vercel and Cloudflare

  • OpenRouter charges the same 5.5% on credit purchases on its Standard plan and lists more open-weight hosts and free models, but no OCR or translation APIs.
  • Vercel AI Gateway bills at list price with no fee, and covers image and video models but not OCR or translation.
  • Cloudflare AI Gateway adds 5% to credit purchases and caps those requests at 200 a minute per gateway.
  • Requesty adds 5% to each top-up.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want the cheapest tokens, a refund if things go wrong, or high request rates from day one. For LLM-only use it costs the same as OpenRouter and more than no-fee relays. It makes most sense for EU teams that want LLMs plus OCR, speech and translation on one invoice, with a DPA and an EU-only endpoint.
