What works today
DeckCraft's README lists what the current alpha can do. You build decks on slide masters with eleven layouts and eight original themes, with sections, speaker notes, comments, headers and footers. The drawing tools cover more than 150 preset shapes, connectors that stay glued to shapes, freeform and scribble tools, merge shapes and effects such as shadows, glow and reflections. Slides can hold pictures, styled tables, charts, basic SmartArt, audio and video.
For presenting there are transitions including Morph, entrance, emphasis, exit and motion-path animations, a full-screen slide show, presenter view, a pen and rehearsed timings. Files go in and out as PowerPoint .pptx, and decks export to PDF (slides, notes pages or handouts), PNG, JPEG, an animated GIF and outlines.
How it compares with PowerPoint
The project measures itself against PowerPoint for Mac. Its roadmap says DeckCraft covers 84% of PowerPoint's features by breadth and 92% of the core ones, and estimates it is about 55% of the way to replacing PowerPoint for real work. Those are the project's own figures, not ours.
The project's gap list is specific about what is missing. There is no printing, PDF export turns slide artwork into images, legacy .ppt and .odp files don't open, SVG pictures don't render, and fonts have only Regular, Bold and Italic faces. Closing an edited presentation can discard changes without asking (#60), and some Windows PCs crash at start (#40, #59). The interface is English only, although Chinese, Japanese and Korean can be typed through an input method.
Where the project says DeckCraft goes further is automation: every button is also a command, and the same commands are open to the deckcraft-cli tool, a JSON control channel and an MCP server for AI agents.
Before you switch
DeckCraft is labelled alpha. By the roadmap, beta needs testing on a corpus of real decks and fixes for the data-loss and startup-crash bugs. Until then, work on copies of your decks rather than on the only copy, and keep PowerPoint or another app at hand for anything you must deliver.
About the Craft Apps
DeckCraft is one of the Crafting Apps from the ArtCraft team: free, open-source tools written from scratch in Rust, each able to stand on its own. The others include PhotoCraft for image editing, PdfCraft for PDFs and DesignCraft for page layout. The project was renamed from SlideCraft to DeckCraft on 2026-10-06, according to its roadmap.
The code is dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. The README says the themes, layouts, shape geometry, icons and sample decks are original work and that no Microsoft artwork, fonts, themes or templates are used. The ArtCraft name and logos are trademarks and not covered by the license, and DeckCraft is not affiliated with Microsoft.
