What WordCraft is

In one or two sentences, before anything else.

WordCraft is a free, open-source word processor from the ArtCraft team that rebuilds the Microsoft Word workflow from scratch in pure Rust. It opens and saves .docx files and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD and in the browser.

Main features

What it can do, one sentence each, and whether we actually tested it.

  • Word-style ribbon and shortcuts

Word's ribbon tabs, groups and keyboard behaviour: Enter continues a list, Tab demotes it, F4 repeats, F7 checks spelling, and the Styles gallery previews styles live.

  • .docx and other formats

Opens and saves .docx, .odt, .rtf, .html, .md, .tex and .txt, opens Word 97-2003 .doc files, and exports PDF with selectable text, links and bookmarks.

The project says .docx handling has not yet been tested on a set of real-world files, and .doc files can be opened but not saved.

  • Review and track changes

Track changes with accept and reject, comments in margin balloons or a pane, document comparison, restricted editing, an accessibility checker, and spelling and grammar as you type.

Proofing covers only a few languages: the README names English and Polish, the project's gap list adds a handful more, and Chinese is not among them.

  • References

Tables of contents, footnotes and endnotes, citations and bibliographies in APA, MLA, Chicago or IEEE style, captions, cross-references and an index.

  • Mail merge

Mail merge from a CSV file with merge fields, address block, greeting line and preview, plus envelopes and labels.

Per the project's gap list, Outlook contacts, Access and other database sources and email merge are not supported.

  • Interface in 21 languages

The interface comes in 21 languages, including Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, and follows the system language by default.

  • Works offline

Spelling, grammar and everything else work without an internet connection, according to the README.

  • Command line and MCP for agents

Every action is a command with an id. The same commands drive the ribbon, keyboard shortcuts, a command-line tool (convert, inspect, run) and an MCP server that AI agents can use.

Who it is for

The people it helps and the problems it solves, and where it ranks.

Built for

  • Linux and FreeBSD users who get .docx files from colleagues
  • People used to Word's ribbon and shortcuts who want a free, open-source word processor
  • Writers who work on computers without an internet connection
  • Developers who want to create or edit .docx files from scripts or an AI agent
  • Students and researchers who need APA, MLA, Chicago or IEEE citations, footnotes and tables of contents

Problems it solves

  • Opening and editing .docx files on a computer where Microsoft Word isn't available, such as Linux or FreeBSD
  • Having to learn a different interface when moving away from Word
  • Converting many documents to PDF and other formats from the command line
  • Letting an AI agent edit documents and check its own work without screenshots

What it is good at

What the project's documentation says you can do with it.

  1. Case 1

Per the README: review a .docx a colleague sent, with Track Changes on and comments in the margin, then save it back as .docx.

    Input

A contract draft, `contract.docx`, from a colleague: open it, turn on Track Changes on the Review tab, edit the text, add comments, accept or reject earlier changes and save.

    What the docs say

The README lists track changes with accept and reject, comments in margin balloons or a pane, and .docx reading and writing that opens in Word. Caveat: the project has not yet tested .docx handling on a set of real-world files, and its gap list says page breaks can differ from Word's, so check the result in Word before you send it back.

  2. Case 2

Per the README: make personalised letters, envelopes or labels with mail merge from a CSV file.

    Input

A `members.csv` file with name and address columns, merged into a letter with an address block and a greeting line, previewed, then finished to a new document.

    What the docs say

The README says the Mailings tab does mail merge from CSV with merge fields, address block, greeting line, rules and preview, and makes envelopes and labels. Caveat: the project's gap list says Outlook contacts, Access and other database sources and email merge are not supported.

  3. Case 3

Per the README: convert documents from the command line, or let an AI agent edit them through an MCP server.

    Input

`wordcraft-cli convert report.docx report.pdf` to make a PDF, or `claude mcp add wordcraft -- wordcraft-cli mcp` to give an MCP client such as Claude Code a headless document editor.

    What the docs say

The README says the CLI converts between docx, pdf, odt, rtf, html, md, tex, txt and png, and that agents can check their work with `inspect_document` instead of screenshots. Caveat: on macOS the command-line tool is a separate download (`wordcraft-cli-<version>-macos-universal.zip`), and limiting the agent to certain folders is opt-in (`--automation-read-root`, `--automation-write-root`).

Where it falls short

What it does badly, with the evidence, and what we could not settle.

Weak

Weak

  • WordCraft is alpha software, and its own team says it can't yet replace Word for all real work.

Evidence: The README's roadmap says WordCraft is in alpha. The team estimates it is about 60% of the way to replacing all of Word for real work, about 55% for a typical professional's weekly work and about 63% for everyday essentials.

  • People whose documents must keep Word's exact layout when they go back and forth with Word users (legal, academic, forms) should not switch to WordCraft yet.

Evidence: The project's gap list names these as beta blockers: .docx has never been tested on real-world files, pagination differs from Word (there is no metric-matched substitute for the Aptos font), and charts from Word stay read-only.

  • Charts and SmartArt don't yet reliably survive a round trip.

Evidence: The README lists keeping charts and SmartArt through a round trip as work needed for beta. The gap list says charts made in Word stay read-only, and combo, 3D, radar and stock charts show a placeholder.

  • Users have reported crashes and freezes.

Evidence: The gap list names a startup crash on Intel UHD Graphics (#170), a crash on an Intel Mac running macOS 12.7.6 (#979), and freezes with Thai fonts and in the font selector (#59, #31) as open.

  • On Wayland, the app runs through XWayland by default; switching to native Wayland loses file drag and drop.

Evidence: The README says winit, the windowing library, supports dragging files into the window only on X11. Starting with `WORDCRAFT_WAYLAND=1` gives native Wayland, for example for sharper text with fractional scaling, at the cost of file drag and drop.

  • No VBA macros, cloud storage or real-time co-authoring, and .doc files can't be saved.

Evidence: The gap list says macros in .docm files are preserved but not run, there are no Office add-ins, cloud storage or real-time co-authoring, and the .doc reader is read-only.

  • Spelling and grammar checking doesn't cover Chinese.

Evidence: The README names English and Polish. The gap list says proofing covers English, Polish, Portuguese, Italian, Croatian, Turkish, Russian and Czech only, and text in other languages is left unmarked.

  • Printing is still being finished.

Evidence: The README lists native printing among the work needed for beta. The gap list says the desktop app now prints through craft-print with printer choice, copies, collation, duplex and grayscale, while driver tray options and pages per sheet are still missing; the web version prints through the browser.

Uncertain

Uncertain

  • How faithfully it handles the .docx files you actually receive.

Why unsure: The project hasn't yet opened, rendered and round-tripped a corpus of files from Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages and compared them with Word page by page.

  • Speed on very long documents with many pictures.

Why unsure: The README's speed figure comes from the project's own 188-page sample. The gap list says performance on real documents of 500 pages or more with many pictures hasn't been measured.

  • How complete Chinese and other East Asian typography is.

Why unsure: The gap list says Phonetic Guide, Enclose Characters, the document grid and vertical text are in, but the remaining East Asian typography depth hasn't been measured; the roadmap puts East Asian typography at 25% parity with Word.

Common questions

Answer first, then why, an example, the limits and what to do next.

Where is the official WordCraft download?

WordCraft's official files are on the project's GitHub releases page, github.com/storytold/wordcraft/releases, and the buttons at the top of this page link straight to them.

Why

The README's Downloads section sends people to GitHub: the latest release holds every build, and older versions are on the full list of releases. The WordCraft page on getartcraft.com, the ArtCraft team's own site, also links its download buttons to GitHub release files.

Limits

getartcraft.com's buttons can lag behind: on 17 October 2026 they still pointed to version 0.5.0, an older release than the newest one on GitHub.

Next step

Most Windows PCs need the x64 .msi installer and every Mac the universal .dmg; the install guide below covers each system step by step.

Is WordCraft free?

WordCraft is free and open source, dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0 at your option.

Why

The README describes the Crafting Apps, WordCraft among them, as free, open-source tools from the ArtCraft team.

Next step

Download it from the box at the top of this page; every button links straight to the official file on GitHub.

Is WordCraft safe to download?

WordCraft's official builds come from the project's own GitHub releases, and the Windows and macOS builds are signed.

Why

The README says the Windows installers and executables are code-signed and the macOS app is signed and notarized. Every release also has a SHA256SUMS.txt file with a checksum for each file.

Limits

The Linux, FreeBSD and web builds are not described as signed, so check them against SHA256SUMS.txt. The AUR and Gentoo packages are maintained by community members, not by the WordCraft team.

Next step

To check a file, compare its SHA-256 checksum with the line for it in SHA256SUMS.txt from the same GitHub release; More about WordCraft, below the install guide, gives the command for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Can I download WordCraft from SourceForge or other download sites?

SourceForge, free-codecs.com, TechSpot and wordcraft.run all list WordCraft for download, but they are third-party sites: the project's README and getartcraft.com point downloads only to GitHub.

Why

When we checked on 17 October 2026, the SourceForge project described itself as an exact mirror of the GitHub repository and said SourceForge is not affiliated with WordCraft, without saying who set it up. The free-codecs.com links we checked redirected to the official GitHub files, and wordcraft.run's download page links to them directly. TechSpot listed an older version, 0.5.0, behind its own download page.

Limits

wordcraft.run's online editor is not the official web version: the site says it runs a modified community build with an added agent command bridge, and that it is not affiliated with or endorsed by ArtCraft.

Next step

Download from the buttons at the top of this page, which link straight to GitHub. If you take a copy from another site, check it against SHA256SUMS.txt from the GitHub release, as described under More about WordCraft below.

Can WordCraft open my Word documents?

WordCraft opens and saves .docx files, and it also opens older Word 97-2003 .doc files.

Limits

The project says it has not yet tested .docx handling on a set of real-world files, page breaks can differ from Word's, charts made in Word stay read-only, and .doc files can't be saved. Password-protected .docx files open and save; AES-encrypted .doc files don't open.

Next step

Keep the original file, and check important documents in Word before you send them back.

Does WordCraft run on Mac and Linux?

WordCraft runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, and also in a web browser.

Why

The macOS build is universal, for both Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Linux gets AppImage, Flatpak, .deb, .rpm and tarball builds for x86_64 and ARM64, plus a RISC-V tarball.

Limits

On Wayland desktops the app runs through XWayland by default, because dragging files into the window only works on X11.

Is there a WordCraft app for Android?

WordCraft has no Android or iPhone app: the project ships builds for Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD and the web, and its parity notes put Word's iPad, iPhone and Android apps out of scope.

Why

Other products share the name. When we checked on 17 October 2026, WordCraft - Solo Word Games on Google Play was a Scrabble-style word game by Mnemosynch Inc., and soft112.com's WordCraft 1 was a Java crossword-style board game by mkns, listed with a 2002 release date. Neither is related to this word processor.

Limits

The web build runs in a browser, but you have to host it on a web server yourself, and the README doesn't say whether it works on phones.

Next step

This page is about the WordCraft word processor from the ArtCraft team; the buttons at the top link to its official files.

How do I update WordCraft?

To update WordCraft, download the latest release from this page or from GitHub; the Linux AppImage can also update itself with AppImageUpdate.

Why

The README points to the latest release for every build and publishes .zsync files that AppImageUpdate uses.

Limits

The README doesn't describe an automatic updater inside the app on Windows or macOS.

Next step

ArtCraft Launcher can install and update several Craft apps in one place.

How does WordCraft compare with Microsoft Word?

WordCraft copies Word's ribbon and workflow, but its own team rates it alpha software that is about 60% of the way to replacing Word for real work.

Why

The roadmap puts it at about 55% for a typical professional's weekly work and about 63% for everyday essentials. Beta still needs real-world .docx testing, charts and SmartArt that survive a round trip, pagination closer to Word's, a stability sweep and native printing.

Limits

Per the project's gap list there is no VBA macro execution, no cloud storage and no real-time co-authoring.

Next step

Try it on copies of your own documents before relying on it.

How to install WordCraft

Step by step for each system, plus the fixes the project documents for common problems.

Windows

  1. Click Download for Windows at the top of this page. You get the x64 installer, wordcraft-<version>-windows-x64.msi, straight from the project's GitHub release.
  2. Double-click the downloaded .msi file and follow the installer. The installer and the program are code-signed.
  3. Have a Snapdragon or other ARM PC, or 32-bit Windows? Pick the windows-arm64 or windows-x86 installer under Other downloads instead.
  4. Prefer not to install anything? Download the portable zip, wordcraft-<version>-windows-x64-portable.zip, from Other downloads, unzip it and run wordcraft.exe.
  5. To install several Craft apps at once, use ArtCraft Launcher.

If something goes wrong

WordCraft flashes in Task Manager and quits before its window appears.
The README explains that the desktop app uses only DirectX 12 by default, because letting wgpu also create an OpenGL instance can crash some graphics drivers (AMD's atio6axx.dll). To try another graphics backend, open PowerShell in the folder that holds the program and run $env:WGPU_BACKEND = "vulkan", then & .\wordcraft.exe. Afterwards, Remove-Item Env:WGPU_BACKEND restores the default. Setting gl explicitly can bring the driver crash back on affected PCs.
The app quits right after its window appears, and the log says "Parent device is lost".
Per the README, WordCraft compiles DirectX 12 shaders with FXC, the compiler built into Windows, so it needs no dxcompiler.dll or dxil.dll and ignores copies another program put on PATH (#603). WGPU_DX12_COMPILER (fxc, dxc or auto) overrides this; with dxc, a matching dxcompiler.dll and dxil.dll must sit next to wordcraft.exe. Setting WGPU_BACKEND to vulkan avoids DirectX 12 altogether.
WordCraft is slow on an older Windows PC.
Per the README, when DirectX 12 finds no graphics card with a driver for it (for example Intel 4th-generation graphics on Windows 11), it only offers Microsoft's software renderer. In that case WordCraft switches to OpenGL by itself, and the log records the choice in lines starting with graphics:. WGPU_BACKEND still overrides it, for example $env:WGPU_BACKEND = "gl" or "dx12".
Where is the log file to attach to a bug report?
On Windows it is wordcraft.log in %APPDATA%\WordCraft\logs\. Each launch renames the previous log to wordcraft.1.log (and that one to wordcraft.2.log), so the log of a run that crashed survives the next start. Document text is never logged.

macOS

  1. Click Download for macOS at the top of this page. You get wordcraft-<version>-macos-universal.dmg, one build for both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
  2. Open the .dmg and drag WordCraft into your Applications folder.
  3. Open WordCraft from Applications. The README says the app is signed and notarized.
  4. Want the command-line tool too? wordcraft-cli-<version>-macos-universal.zip under Other downloads is also signed and notarized.
  5. To install several Craft apps at once, use ArtCraft Launcher.

If something goes wrong

Where is the log file to attach to a bug report?
On macOS it is wordcraft.log in ~/Library/Application Support/WordCraft/logs/. A start from the Dock has no terminal, so the README says this file is what to attach to a bug report.

Linux

  1. Download the AppImage for your processor from the box at the top of this page: wordcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.AppImage for most PCs, or the aarch64 file for ARM64 machines.
  2. Make it executable, then run it: chmod +x wordcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.AppImage, then ./wordcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.AppImage.
  3. On Debian or Ubuntu you can install the .deb instead: sudo apt install ./wordcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.deb.
  4. On Fedora or RHEL, install the .rpm: sudo dnf install ./wordcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.rpm. The README lists the .rpm for openSUSE too.
  5. For a sandboxed install, download the .flatpak file and run flatpak install --user wordcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.flatpak.
  6. The tarball (.tar.gz) can be unpacked anywhere. The RISC-V (riscv64) tarball needs glibc 2.39 or newer, such as Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 13.
  7. On Arch Linux, community members maintain three AUR packages; the WordCraft team doesn't publish to the AUR itself. yay -S wordcraft-bin installs the prebuilt release.
  8. To update the AppImage, use AppImageUpdate; each release publishes the .zsync files it needs.
  9. To install several Craft apps at once, use ArtCraft Launcher.

If something goes wrong

Text looks soft with fractional scaling on a Wayland desktop.
Per the README, the app runs through XWayland when it is available, because winit supports dragging files into the window only on X11. To use the native Wayland backend instead, start it with WORDCRAFT_WAYLAND=1 wordcraft. You lose file drag and drop.
Where is the log file to attach to a bug report?
On Linux it is wordcraft.log in ~/.config/wordcraft/logs/ (or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/wordcraft/logs/ when that is set).

FreeBSD

  1. Download wordcraft-<version>-freebsd-x86_64.tar.gz from Other downloads in the box at the top of this page.
  2. Unpack it with tar -xzf wordcraft-<version>-freebsd-x86_64.tar.gz and start the wordcraft program it contains.
  3. To install several Craft apps at once, use ArtCraft Launcher.

Web

  1. Download wordcraft-web-<version>.zip from Other downloads in the box at the top of this page.
  2. Unzip it, put the folder on any static web server and open it in a modern browser. The README describes this build as a static site you host yourself.

More about WordCraft

WordCraft download: official files and other sites

The official files are on the project's GitHub releases page: the README sends people there, and the buttons at the top of this page link straight to those files. The WordCraft page on getartcraft.com, the ArtCraft team's own site, links to the same GitHub files.

Several download sites list WordCraft as well, but neither the README nor getartcraft.com links to any of them. This is what we found when we checked them on 17 October 2026:

SiteWhat it isWhere the download goes
SourceForge (wordcraft.mirror)Describes itself as an exact mirror of the GitHub repository and says SourceForge is not affiliated with WordCraft; the page doesn't say who set it upFiles with the same names as the GitHub release, SHA256SUMS.txt included, hosted on SourceForge
free-codecs.comA download site that listed version 0.7.0Its own redirect links; the Windows, macOS and Linux links we checked led to the official GitHub files
TechSpotA download site that listed version 0.5.0, last updated 12 October 2026, as freewareTechSpot's own download page; we did not follow it through to a file
wordcraft.runAn independent site that says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by ArtCraftIts download page links to the official GitHub files; its online editor runs a modified community build, not the official web version

A copy from another site may well be identical to the official file, but you can only be sure after checking it against the checksums in the GitHub release.

How to check the file you downloaded

Every WordCraft release on GitHub includes SHA256SUMS.txt, which lists a SHA-256 checksum for each file. Download it from the same release as your file, then compute your file's checksum:

  • Windows, in PowerShell: Get-FileHash .\wordcraft-<version>-windows-x64.msi (Get-FileHash uses SHA-256 unless you name another algorithm)
  • macOS, in Terminal: shasum -a 256 wordcraft-<version>-macos-universal.dmg
  • Linux, in a terminal: sha256sum wordcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.AppImage

The result must match the line for that file name in SHA256SUMS.txt; PowerShell prints it in capital letters, which makes no difference. If it doesn't match, delete the file and download it again from GitHub. According to the README, the Windows installers and the macOS app are also signed.

What works today

WordCraft follows Word's ribbon, tabs and keyboard shortcuts, so Enter continues a list, Tab demotes it and F7 checks spelling. According to its README, it covers writing and formatting, styles and themes, lists, tables with formulas and header rows that repeat across pages, headers and footers, page numbers, watermarks, drop caps and automatic hyphenation. The References tab builds tables of contents, footnotes, citations in APA, MLA, Chicago or IEEE style, indexes and captions. The Review tab has track changes, comments in margin balloons, document comparison and spelling and grammar checking. Mailings does mail merge from CSV, envelopes and labels.

WordCraft reads and writes .docx, and also .odt, .rtf, .html, Markdown, LaTeX and plain text. It opens Word 97-2003 .doc files and exports PDF with selectable text, links and bookmarks. The interface comes in 21 languages, including Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and the README says spelling, grammar and everything else work offline.

For automation, every action is a command with an id. The same commands drive the ribbon, keyboard shortcuts, a command-line tool and an MCP server, so an AI agent can create, edit and inspect documents.

How it compares with Microsoft Word

The project calls WordCraft alpha software. Its team estimates it is about 60% of the way to replacing all of Word for real work, about 55% for a typical professional's weekly work and about 63% for everyday essentials. Before beta, the team wants testing against real-world .docx files, charts and SmartArt that survive a round trip, pagination closer to Word's, a stability sweep and native printing.

The project's own list of shortfalls adds detail. No corpus of real .docx files has been round-tripped yet, page breaks can differ from Word, charts made in Word stay read-only, macros are kept but not run, and there is no cloud storage or real-time co-authoring. Spelling and grammar cover a handful of languages, and Chinese is not one of them.

WordCraft is a clean-room project, built from public specifications and observation. It is independent and not affiliated with Microsoft; Word's name is used only to describe the workflow it is compatible with.

About the Craft Apps

WordCraft is one of the Crafting Apps from the ArtCraft team: free, open-source creative tools, each written from scratch in Rust and each able to stand on its own. The family includes PhotoCraft for image editing, FilmCraft for video and PdfCraft for PDFs. WordCraft itself uses no Electron or Tauri; its interface is native egui drawn on the GPU.

WordCraft is dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. Its builds come from the project's GitHub releases: signed installers for Windows and macOS, several Linux package formats, a FreeBSD tarball and a web version you can host yourself.
