What SoundCraft is

In one or two sentences, before anything else.

SoundCraft is a free, open-source digital audio workstation (DAW) from the ArtCraft team: a clean-room rewrite of Avid Pro Tools in pure Rust for recording, editing and mixing audio. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD, and in a web browser.

Main features

What it can do, one sentence each, and whether we actually tested it.

  • Pro Tools-style Edit window

Arranges and edits tracks with Shuffle, Slip, Spot and Grid modes and the Smart, Selector, Grabber, Trim, Pencil, Zoom and Scrubber tools, with fades and crossfades in five shapes, playlists with comping lanes, clip gain lines and undo for everything.

  • Mix window and automation

Ten inserts and ten sends per track, busses, aux inputs, master faders, VCAs, routing folders and automatic plugin delay compensation. Volume, pan, mute, sends and every plugin parameter can be automated live in Write, Touch, Latch and Trim passes.

  • Built-in plugins and plugin hosting

Ships its own EQs, compressor, gate, de-esser, reverbs, delay, chorus, flanger and phaser, a subtractive synth, a drum synth and a sampler, and hosts CLAP, VST3 and Audio Units plugins. Any processor can run offline as AudioSuite.

The project's gap list says the signed macOS build still blocks third-party VST3 bundles and that Audio Unit editor views are not hosted yet.

  • MIDI and notation

Instrument and MIDI tracks, a piano roll with a velocity lane, step input, quantize and transpose, Standard MIDI File import and export, Audio-to-MIDI from a sung or played melody, a Score Editor and MusicXML export.

Recording MIDI from a keyboard or controller is not supported yet (README, Status and roadmap).

  • Recording

Punch in on a selection or on the fly, pre- and post-roll, loop recording with a playlist per take, input monitoring through the full channel strip, and autosave with recovery.

The README lists choosing an audio interface and buffer size as missing; the roadmap says device, sample-rate and buffer-size choice now exist, but routing to physical channels and a low-latency duplex path do not.

  • Audio files and bounce

Imports WAV/BWF/RF64, AIFF/AIFC, FLAC, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, ALAC, CAF and the audio of MP4/MOV movies at any sample rate and bit depth. Bounces the mix or stems to WAV, AIFF or FLAC with dither, reporting peak, true peak and integrated loudness (LUFS).

The gap list says MP3, AAC and Ogg export are not there yet.

  • Video and surround

A video track with thumbnails and a Video window that follows the playhead, decoding H.264, ProRes and Motion JPEG in pure Rust with timecode burn-in; surround formats from stereo to 9.1.6 and Ambisonics, with a surround panner and object/bed routing.

Dolby Atmos/ADM delivery and HEVC/DNx decoding are on the gap list.

  • Command line, control channel and MCP

Every action is a command with an id and JSON parameters, reachable from the menus, the keyboard, `soundcraft-cli`, a JSON control channel and an MCP server for AI agents. Programmatic calls never open dialogs, and `session.inspect` reports exactly what changed.

Who it is for

The people it helps and the problems it solves, and where it ranks.

Built for

  • Pro Tools users who want a free, open-source DAW with the same Edit and Mix window workflow
  • Musicians and podcasters on Windows, macOS, Linux or FreeBSD who want a free multitrack recorder, editor and mixer
  • Developers and AI-agent users who want to script edits, mixes and bounces from the command line or over MCP
  • Songwriters who sketch with MIDI instruments and want a printable score or MusicXML for notation programs

Problems it solves

  • They want Pro Tools-style editing and mixing in software that costs nothing and whose code they can read.
  • They need a DAW that runs on Linux or FreeBSD, or in a browser, as well as on Windows and macOS.
  • They want to automate repetitive mix and bounce jobs without clicking through dialogs.
  • They want to turn a sung or played melody into MIDI and export it as notation.

What it is good at

What the project's documentation says you can do with it.

  1. Case 1

Per the README, recording, editing, mixing and bouncing work end to end: record a vocal over a backing track and bounce the mix.

    Input

A backing track as a WAV or FLAC file imported into a new session, then a vocal recorded on a new track with punch-in or loop recording.

    What the docs say

The README says recording supports punch-in, loop recording with a playlist per take and input monitoring through the channel strip, and Bounce writes WAV, AIFF or FLAC with a peak, true-peak and LUFS readout. Caveat: the gap list says takes are held in memory until you stop, so very long takes can exhaust RAM and a crash during a take loses it.

  2. Case 2

Per the README's agents and scripts section: change a mix and bounce it from the command line, without opening the app.

    Input

    soundcraft-cli run --demo --cmd 'mix.volume={"track":"Kick","db":-6}' --cmd 'mix.insert={"track":"Bass","plugin":"eq_7band"}' --bounce mix.wav

    What the docs say

The docs say every action is a command with JSON parameters and programmatic calls never open dialogs, so the run loads the demo song, turns the kick down 6 dB, adds a 7-band EQ to the bass and writes mix.wav. Caveat: the README lists a separate command-line download only for macOS and does not say where soundcraft-cli comes from on Windows or Linux.

  3. Case 3

Per the README: give an AI agent such as Claude a DAW through SoundCraft's MCP server.

    Input

claude mcp add soundcraft -- soundcraft-cli mcp --demo, or soundcraft-cli mcp --automation-read-root DIR --automation-write-root DIR to keep the agent to chosen folders.

    What the docs say

The docs say the MCP server exposes the same commands as the menus and `session.inspect` reports exactly what changed, so an agent can check its own work; read and write folders are separate roots. Caveat: the project marks the whole app pre-alpha, so an agent's edits need the same checking as yours.

  4. Case 4

Per the README: check a session for missing audio, sample-rate mismatches and clips that run past their source before you mix or hand it on.

    Input

Open SoundCraft > Session Audio Health in the app, or run soundcraft-cli run --demo --cmd 'session.audio_health={}' for the same JSON report.

    What the docs say

The README says the report covers loaded audio availability, sample-rate mismatches and clip source bounds across all playlists, including alternate takes, and suggests a fix for each issue. Caveat: it checks loaded media only, not files on disk, signal levels, plugins or routing.

Where it falls short

What it does badly, with the evidence, and what we could not settle.

Weak

Weak

  • Pre-alpha software: not ready to replace Pro Tools for real work.

Evidence: The README calls SoundCraft pre-alpha and estimates it is roughly 40 % of the way to replacing Pro Tools for real work. The roadmap says the core-workflow gate for alpha still fails.

  • Don't use SoundCraft yet for paid studio work or any project you must hand to or receive from a Pro Tools studio.

Evidence: The README and gap list say there is no AAF/OMF session interchange and no way to open or save .ptx sessions; SoundCraft's own sessions are .scraft JSON files.

  • No MIDI recording from a keyboard or controller.

Evidence: The README lists recording MIDI from a controller as missing; the gap list says there is no MIDI device input or output, so MIDI parts are drawn or imported from MIDI files.

  • Audio interface support is incomplete.

Evidence: The README lists choosing an audio interface and buffer size as missing. The roadmap adds that device, rate and buffer choice now exist, but routing to physical channels, one low-latency duplex stream and latency compensation do not, the mix runs in fixed 512-sample blocks, and ASIO is not in the official builds.

  • Long sessions and long takes live in memory.

Evidence: The gap list says every source is decoded whole into memory and recordings accumulate in RAM until stop, so hour-long multitrack sessions and long takes can exhaust memory and a crash during a long take loses it.

  • Third-party VST3 plugins are blocked in the signed macOS build.

Evidence: The gap list says the signed macOS build lacks the entitlement that lets it load third-party VST3 bundles (issues #153 and #149), and Audio Unit editor views are not hosted yet.

  • No MP3 or AAC export, and an English-only interface.

Evidence: The gap list says Bounce writes only WAV/BWF/RF64, AIFF and FLAC, and that the interface is English only with no CJK font fallback; the README says translations are missing.

Uncertain

Uncertain

  • How closely SoundCraft's bounces, fades, pan law and plugins match Pro Tools' sound.

Why unsure: The gap list says nothing is compared against Pro Tools' output yet (there is no fidelity harness).

  • How stable it is on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and the web.

Why unsure: The roadmap says five platforms are built but macOS is the one exercised, and the gap list says Windows, Linux and the web build are exercised only lightly at runtime, with open startup and rendering reports.

  • Whether the speed claims hold on your computer.

Why unsure: The README says the UI holds 120 frames per second with seventy-odd tracks playing, but the roadmap rates performance as unmeasured, and nobody independent has measured it.

  • How well your own third-party plugins and real sessions work.

Why unsure: The README lists CLAP, VST3 and Audio Units hosting, but compatibility depends on each plugin, and nobody has published tests with real-world plugin sets or large sessions.

Common questions

Answer first, then why, an example, the limits and what to do next.

Is SoundCraft free?

SoundCraft is free to download and use. The code is open source under the MIT or Apache-2.0 licence, at your choice, so you can also read, change and share it.

Limits

The ArtCraft name, wordmark and logos are trademarks and are not covered by the licence; forks and modified versions must remove them.

Is SoundCraft safe to download?

SoundCraft's official builds come only from the storytold/soundcraft GitHub releases, and the buttons on this page link straight to those files.

Why

The README says the Windows installers and executables are code-signed, the macOS app is signed and notarized, and every release has a SHA256SUMS.txt file with a checksum for each download.

Limits

We have not audited the code or tested the builds. SoundCraft is pre-alpha, so keep backups of sessions you care about.

Next step

Download from this page or from the GitHub releases page rather than from third-party mirrors.

Does SoundCraft run on Mac, Windows and Linux?

SoundCraft has builds for Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD, plus a WebAssembly version that runs in a modern browser.

Why

Windows gets x64, Arm64 and 32-bit installers and portable zips; macOS gets one universal app for Apple silicon and Intel; Linux gets AppImage, Flatpak, .deb, .rpm and tarballs for x86_64 and ARM64.

Limits

The roadmap says macOS is the platform that has been exercised, and the gap list says Windows, Linux and the web build have been run only lightly so far.

Can SoundCraft replace Pro Tools?

SoundCraft cannot replace Pro Tools yet: the project itself estimates it is roughly 40 % of the way to replacing Pro Tools for real work.

Why

The README says it covers 94 % of Pro Tools' menu items (measured) and about 70 % of its features by presence. Recording, editing, mixing and bouncing work, but recording MIDI from a controller and AAF/OMF session exchange are missing, and it cannot open .ptx sessions.

Limits

Nobody has compared its bounces with Pro Tools' output yet.

Next step

To bring material across today, use plain audio files: SoundCraft imports WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3 and other formats at any sample rate and bit depth.

How do I update SoundCraft?

The simplest documented way to update SoundCraft is ArtCraft Launcher, which checks each Craft app's GitHub releases and updates the copies you have.

Why

On Linux, the README says the AppImage updates itself with AppImageUpdate, using the .zsync files published with each release.

Limits

The SoundCraft README does not describe an in-app updater, so don't count on one.

Next step

Get the launcher from its page: [ArtCraft Launcher](/artcraft-launcher).

Does SoundCraft have a Chinese interface?

SoundCraft's interface is English only for now.

Why

The README says translations are missing, and the roadmap lists Simplified Chinese, like every language except English, at 0 %.

Limits

The gap list also says there is no CJK font fallback yet.

How to install SoundCraft

Step by step for each system, plus the fixes the project documents for common problems.

Windows

  1. Click Download for Windows at the top of this page. You get the x64 installer, soundcraft-<version>-windows-x64.msi, which fits most 64-bit Intel and AMD PCs.
  2. Double-click the .msi file and follow the installer. The README says SoundCraft's Windows installers and executables are code-signed.
  3. Snapdragon and other ARM PCs, and 32-bit Windows, have their own installers in Other downloads: soundcraft-<version>-windows-arm64.msi and soundcraft-<version>-windows-x86.msi.
  4. To run SoundCraft without installing it, take the portable zip for your PC from Other downloads (for example soundcraft-<version>-windows-x64-portable.zip), unzip it and double-click soundcraft.exe.
  5. To update SoundCraft, or to install several Craft apps at once, use ArtCraft Launcher: it checks each app's GitHub releases and installs the right build for your PC.

If something goes wrong

SoundCraft doesn't open on Windows.
The README says the app starts with DirectX 12 only, because also creating an OpenGL instance can crash some graphics drivers (AMD's atio6axx.dll). To try another backend, open PowerShell in the folder that contains soundcraft.exe and run $env:WGPU_BACKEND = "vulkan", then & .\soundcraft.exe. Afterwards Remove-Item Env:WGPU_BACKEND restores the default. Don't force gl: it can bring the driver crash back.
You need a log file for a bug report.
SoundCraft writes soundcraft.log to %APPDATA%\SoundCraft\logs\. Each launch keeps the previous log as soundcraft.1.log, so the log of a run that crashed survives the next start. Attach it to an issue on GitHub.

macOS

  1. Click Download for macOS at the top of this page. You get soundcraft-<version>-macos-universal.dmg, one app for both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
  2. Open the .dmg file and drag SoundCraft to the Applications folder.
  3. Open SoundCraft from Applications. The README says the macOS app is signed and notarized.
  4. For scripts and AI agents, the command-line tool soundcraft-cli-<version>-macos-universal.zip is in Other downloads; it is signed and notarized too.
  5. To update SoundCraft, or to install several Craft apps at once, use ArtCraft Launcher.

If something goes wrong

You need a log file for a bug report.
SoundCraft writes soundcraft.log to ~/Library/Application Support/SoundCraft/logs/. A start from the Dock has no terminal, so this file is what to attach to an issue; the previous run's log is kept as soundcraft.1.log.

Linux

  1. At the top of this page, Download for Linux or Other downloads gives you the AppImage: soundcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.AppImage for most PCs, or soundcraft-<version>-linux-aarch64.AppImage for ARM64. The README says the AppImage runs anywhere.
  2. Open a terminal in your download folder, make the file executable with chmod +x soundcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.AppImage, then start it with ./soundcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.AppImage.
  3. On Debian or Ubuntu you can install the .deb instead: sudo apt install ./soundcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.deb.
  4. On Fedora or RHEL, install the .rpm with sudo dnf install ./soundcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.rpm. The README lists the same .rpm for openSUSE.
  5. For a sandboxed install, use the Flatpak: flatpak install --user soundcraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.flatpak.
  6. A plain .tar.gz tarball unpacks anywhere. RISC-V (riscv64) builds need glibc 2.39 or newer, for example Ubuntu 24.04.
  7. To update the AppImage, the README points to AppImageUpdate, which uses the .zsync file published beside each AppImage.
  8. To install several Craft apps at once, or to update SoundCraft from one window, use ArtCraft Launcher.

If something goes wrong

You need a log file for a bug report.
SoundCraft writes soundcraft.log to ~/.config/soundcraft/logs/ (or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/soundcraft/logs/). Started from a terminal, it also prints the log there. Set RUST_LOG=debug for more detail.

FreeBSD

  1. SoundCraft's FreeBSD build is soundcraft-<version>-freebsd-x86_64.tar.gz in Other downloads, for x86_64 only.
  2. The SoundCraft README lists this file but gives no install commands for it. The documented route is ArtCraft Launcher: on FreeBSD it installs Craft apps into /usr/local with a password prompt (polkit), or into ~/.local when polkit isn't installed.

Web

  1. The web version is soundcraft-web-<version>.zip in Other downloads: SoundCraft built as a static WebAssembly site.
  2. Unzip it, upload the files to any static web server and open that address in a modern browser. The README doesn't list a hosted copy, so this is for people who run their own site; to use SoundCraft on your own computer, install the Windows, macOS or Linux version.

More about SoundCraft

What works today

SoundCraft's README says recording, editing, mixing and bouncing work end to end. The Edit window has the Shuffle, Slip, Spot and Grid modes and the Smart, Trim, Pencil and other tools that Pro Tools users know, with playlists, comping lanes, fades and clip gain. The Mix window has ten inserts and ten sends per track, busses, VCAs and automatic plugin delay compensation. MIDI tracks come with built-in instruments, a piano roll, a Score Editor and MusicXML export, and a video track decodes H.264, ProRes and Motion JPEG. Every action is also a command that scripts and AI agents can run through soundcraft-cli or an MCP server.

What is still missing

The project calls SoundCraft pre-alpha. Its README names three gaps that keep it there: choosing an audio interface and buffer size, recording MIDI from a controller, and exchanging sessions with Pro Tools through AAF or OMF. The roadmap's entry for 2026-10-12 says device, sample-rate and buffer-size choice has since arrived, while routing to physical channels and a low-latency duplex path have not. The gap list adds that recordings and imported audio are held in memory, that the signed macOS build blocks third-party VST3 plugins, that MP3, AAC and Ogg export are missing, and that the interface is English only.

How it compares with Pro Tools

SoundCraft follows Pro Tools' workflow on purpose: an Edit window, a Mix window, edit modes, memory locations and AudioSuite processing, so that, in the README's words, "your hands should already know where things are". By the project's own measurement it covers 94 % of Pro Tools' menu items; it estimates about 70 % of the features by presence and roughly 40 % of the way to replacing Pro Tools for real work. Nobody has compared its output with Pro Tools' yet: the gap list says there is no fidelity test against Pro Tools' bounces. It cannot open .ptx sessions. SoundCraft is an independent project and is not affiliated with Avid.

About the Craft Apps

SoundCraft is one of the Crafting Apps from the ArtCraft team: free, open-source creative tools, each written from scratch in Rust and each able to stand on its own. The others include PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, FilmCraft, LightCraft, PdfCraft, EffectCraft and DesignCraft. The code is dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0, and the ArtCraft name and logos are trademarks that the licence does not cover. ArtCraft Launcher installs and updates several Craft apps from one window.
