What Runway is

In one or two sentences, before anything else.

Runway is an AI video platform from New York's Runway AI, Inc. that runs its own Gen-4.5 and Aleph 2.0 models beside Kling 4.0, Veo 3.1 and Seedance on one credit balance. Individual plans cost US$15 to US$95 a month; the legacy Unlimited plan ends November 30, 2026. Gen-4.5 now ranks 28th on Artificial Analysis's silent text-to-video board.

Main features

What it can do, one sentence each, and whether we actually tested it.

  • Gen-4.5, Runway's own video model

Text to video and image to video, 2 to 10 seconds, 720p at 24 or 25 fps, in six aspect ratios from 9:16 to 21:9. It costs 12 credits a second and needs the Standard plan or higher; it makes silent clips.

Per Runway's Gen-4.5 help page and API reference, which has no audio setting for gen4.5. Launched December 1, 2025.

  • Aleph 2.0 and Edit Studio

Edits footage you already have, up to 30 seconds at 1080p: swap a product, relight, change the background or remove objects, guided by one edited frame and applied across cuts. 140 credits per 5 seconds.

Per Runway's May 21, 2026 announcement and pricing page; on all paid plans in the desktop web app.

  • Other labs' models on the same credits

Kling 4.0 and 3.0, Seedance 2.5 and 2.0, Veo 3.1, Wan 3.0, MiniMax H3, Gemini Omni, Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2 and ElevenLabs voices run in the same workspace, each at its own credit rate.

Model list from Runway's pricing page, Kling 4.0 page and October 20, 2026 Claude Marketplace post.

  • Agent, Runway Ads and App Studio

Agent plans and assembles multi-shot videos with voiceover and music in a chat; Runway Ads reads your best Meta, Google and TikTok ads and generates variants; App Studio builds small no-code creative apps.

Per Runway's announcements (Agent May 13, Agent 2.0 June 25) and changelog (App Studio October 26, Runway Ads October 27, 2026); all on paid plans.

  • Act-Two performance capture

Moves a character image or video with a recorded performance, including face, speech and gestures, for up to 30 seconds at 5 credits a second.

Per Runway's Act-Two help page; Standard plan or higher.

  • Editorial outputs: ProRes, HDR, 4K

Gen-4.5 and Aleph 2.0 can export ProRes or PNG sequences (5 extra credits a second), Ruby converts SDR video to HDR, and Pro and Max include unlimited 4K video upscaling.

Per Runway's pricing page, changelog and API pricing; the pricing page lists ProRes and HDR on Max.

  • Runway Dev API

A pay-as-you-go API at US$0.01 a credit for Runway's and other labs' models, with a Model Router that picks a model by cost, speed or quality, published Workflows, product-ad recipes and real-time avatars.

Per Runway's API documentation. Self-serve web-app credits and API credits are separate pools.

  • Plugins, mobile apps and MCP

Panels inside Premiere Pro, After Effects and DaVinci Resolve, iOS and Android apps, and an MCP server that lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Grok generate with your Runway account.

Per Runway's changelog (Adobe plugins September 8, Resolve September 23, 2026) and llms.txt.

Who it is for

The people it helps and the problems it solves, and where it ranks.

Built for

  • Brand and performance marketers who need many ad and social variants from one shoot
  • Editors who want generative edits inside Premiere Pro, After Effects or DaVinci Resolve
  • Small creative teams of two to nine who want one pooled credit balance
  • Developers who want several labs' video models behind one API with per-second prices
  • Enterprises that need IP indemnification, SSO and a contract that rules out training on their footage

Problems it solves

  • Changing a product, background or lighting in existing footage without a reshoot
  • Trying Kling, Seedance, Veo and Runway's own models without four subscriptions
  • Getting ProRes or HDR files from AI clips onto an editorial timeline
  • Turning ads that already perform into new variants for each platform

What it is good at

Public tests other people ran: what they gave it and how it did.

  1. Case 1

A third-party test of Aleph 2.0 by the Creative AI Show on YouTube (May 22, 2026), the day after launch

    Input

Existing clips edited with prompts to change the scene, add mood and adjust visuals in Edit Studio.

    What happened

The hosts found the results interesting but the workflow "a lot clunkier than expected": Aleph 2.0 relies on editing a start frame and then generating a new video from it, which felt to them like image to video with extra steps.

  2. Case 2

Blind public votes on Artificial Analysis's video arenas, which rate the models wherever they run

    Input

Pairwise votes on clips from the same prompts; Gen-4.5 (720p) on the silent text-to-video and image-to-video boards, Aleph 2.0 on the video editing board (checked November 3, 2026).

    What happened

Gen-4.5 sits 28th of 36 on silent text to video (Elo 910) and 29th of 33 on silent image to video (901); Aleph 2.0 is 9th of 10 on video editing (1009). Artificial Analysis notes Gen-4.5 was judged on only the 61% of prompts that fit Runway's 1,000-character limit.

  3. Case 3

The maker's own example in its Aleph 2.0 launch post: one campaign shoot turned into many versions

    Input

Upload an existing ad, edit one frame to swap the product for a new colorway or change the season, then let Aleph 2.0 carry the change through every shot of a clip up to 30 seconds.

    What happened

This is Runway's description, not an outside result. On the pricing page each 5 seconds of Aleph 2.0 costs 140 credits, so Standard's 625 monthly credits cover four 5-second edits.

  4. Case 4

The maker's documented way to spend fewer credits on Seedance 2.5: draft mode, in Agent since October 2, 2026 and in the API

    Input

Render 5-second previews of a shot at 480p, pick the take that works, then enhance only that one to 1080p with the same prompt, seed and duration.

    What happened

Previews bill at the 480p rate of 20 credits a second and the enhancement at the 1080p rate of 68, charged separately. Three previews plus one enhancement cost 640 credits, against 1,020 for three full 1080p tries. These are Runway's published rates; no outside test of the drafts' quality was found.

Where it falls short

What it does badly, with the evidence, and what we could not settle.

Weak

Weak

  • Gen-4.5 has fallen well behind on public leaderboards.

Evidence: Runway launched it as first on Artificial Analysis's text-to-video board. On November 3, 2026 it was 28th of 36 on the silent board (Elo 910), behind Kling 3.0 (1000) and Veo 3.1 (960), and 29th of 33 on silent image to video. It is also capped at 720p and 10 seconds, with no sound.

  • Credits are spent on clips that miss the prompt, and refunds are narrow.

Evidence: Runway's help center says credits come back only when a generation ends in an error, and plan refunds are considered only within 30 days and only if the plan is unused or nearly so. In Apple's feed of the 50 most recent US App Store reviews (October 22 to November 1, 2026), 37 gave one star, and 31 of those complain about credits, charges or price.

  • The unlimited plan is going away.

Evidence: Unlimited closed to new subscribers on June 1, 2026 and legacy plans end on November 30, 2026. Max, its replacement at US$95 a month, has 9,500 credits and no relaxed-rate mode; Unlimited Mode survives only on some models on Pro and Max, varying with promotions.

  • Your uploads and outputs may train Runway's models.

Evidence: Section 4.4 of the terms updated October 23, 2026 grants Runway a perpetual, irrevocable license to use inputs and outputs to train its models. Runway's terms and help center, checked November 3, 2026, describe no way for self-serve plans to opt out; Runway promises no training on customer data to Enterprise customers.

  • Credits are easy to lose on the cheaper plans.

Evidence: Standard and Pro monthly credits expire on the billing date; Free accounts cannot buy credits and their videos carry a watermark; self-serve web-app credits cannot be used on the API.

  • Moderation cannot be switched off, and it misfires on hosted models.

Evidence: Runway's help center says support cannot allowlist accounts or topics. Its status page logged elevated Seedance moderation errors on October 6 and Seedance safety false positives on August 19, 2026.

Uncertain

Uncertain

  • How Gen-4.5 compares with Kling 4.0 and Seedance 2.5 on the same prompt.

Why unsure: No published same-prompt test of these three was found, and Kling 4.0 was not on Artificial Analysis's boards on November 3, 2026.

  • Whether any unlimited option will last.

Why unsure: Runway's help page says Unlimited Mode depends on promotional periods and plan type; PricingSaaS logged an unlimited Wan 3.0 offer on Max that ended October 18, 2026.

  • How much the training-data disputes will matter.

Why unsure: 404 Media reported in July 2024 that Runway gathered YouTube and pirated videos for Gen-3; Runway did not respond to Engadget. Runway is a defendant in the artists' case Andersen v. Stability AI, with a summary judgment hearing set for February 17, 2027.

Common questions

Answer first, then why, an example, the limits and what to do next.

Is Runway free?

Runway has a free plan with 125 one-time credits, but it does not include Gen-4.5 and every video carries a watermark. The cheapest paid plan, Standard, costs US$15 a month or US$12 billed yearly for 625 credits, which Runway says equals 52 seconds of Gen-4.5.

Limits

Free credits never refresh, and free accounts cannot buy more credits.

How much does Runway cost per second of video?

Runway's Gen-4.5 costs 12 credits a second, which is about US$0.29 a second on the monthly Standard plan and US$0.12 on Max or with extra credits. A 5-second clip is 60 credits: about US$1.44 of a monthly Standard plan or US$0.60 on Max.

Why

A Standard credit costs 2.4 US cents (US$15 for 625), a Max credit 1 cent (US$95 for 9,500), and extra credits are sold at 1 cent each.

Limits

Other models cost more: Aleph 2.0 is 140 credits per 5 seconds and Kling 4.0 at 1080p 118, or 89 until November 30, 2026.

Does Runway still have an unlimited plan?

Runway no longer sells its Unlimited plan, and existing Unlimited subscriptions end on November 30, 2026. Monthly subscribers then move to Max at the same US$95 with 9,500 credits and no relaxed-rate Explore Mode; annual subscribers can cancel for a refund of the remaining months or take a credit bonus.

Limits

A separate Unlimited Mode lets Pro and Max users generate without credits on some models, but which models varies with promotions.

How much does the Runway API cost?

Runway's API costs US$0.01 a credit, billed per second of output. Gen-4.5 is US$0.12 a second, Aleph 2.0 US$0.28, Kling 4.0 at 1080p US$0.235 (US$0.188 until November 30, 2026), Seedance 2.5 at 1080p US$0.68 and Veo 3.1 with audio US$0.40.

Limits

Self-serve web-app credits and API credits are separate pools; Runway's unified pricing from September 18, 2026 applies to enterprise commitments.

Can I use Runway videos commercially?

Runway allows commercial use of what you generate and claims no ownership of it, and you do not need to credit Runway. Its usage policy still bans using another person's image or voice without permission, copying a known living artist's style, and adult nudity.

Limits

Videos made on the Free plan carry a Runway watermark.

Does Runway train on my uploads?

Runway's standard terms let it use your inputs and outputs to train its models, under a perpetual, irrevocable license (section 4.4, updated October 23, 2026). Runway's terms and help center, checked November 3, 2026, describe no way for self-serve plans to opt out; Runway says Enterprise customers' content is not used for training and that third-party model providers are contractually barred from training on it.

Next step

If your footage must stay out of training, ask for Enterprise terms in writing before uploading.

Runway Gen-4.5 vs Kling, Veo or Sora: which is better?

Kling 3.0 and Veo 3.1 both rank above Runway Gen-4.5 on Artificial Analysis's silent text-to-video board: Elo 1000 and 960 against 910 on November 3, 2026. Kling 4.0 was not on the board yet, and Sora 2 left OpenAI's API on September 24, 2026.

Why

Artificial Analysis ranks models from thousands of blind votes; Gen-4.5 was judged on the 61% of its prompts that fit Runway's 1,000-character limit.

Next step

Runway hosts Kling 4.0 and Veo 3.1 too, so one subscription lets you run the same prompt on all three.

Can I get a refund from Runway?

Runway refunds a plan only within 30 days and only if it is unused or nearly unused, at its own discretion. Credits spent on generations that finished are not refunded, even when the result misses the prompt; they come back automatically only after a generation error.

Limits

Purchases through the App Store or Google Play must be refunded by Apple or Google, and a granted refund downgrades the account to Free at once.

Is Runway legit and safe to use?

Runway is an established company with SOC 2 Type II and ISO/IEC 27001 certification and US$315 million raised in February 2026. The risks are in its terms and reputation: your content may train its models, 37 of its 50 most recent US App Store reviews gave one star, and it is a defendant in an artists' copyright lawsuit.

Why

In July 2024 404 Media reported, from a leaked spreadsheet, that Runway gathered thousands of YouTube videos and pirated films to train Gen-3.

Runway vs Higgsfield or Pika: which is cheaper?

Pika has the cheapest subscription at US$10 a month for 900 credits, and Higgsfield starts at US$15 a month billed yearly for 200 credits, against US$12 to US$15 for Runway Standard. All three host other labs' models next to their own; Runway's extras are Aleph 2.0 for editing existing footage and ProRes or HDR exports on Max.

Limits

Credits are not comparable between sites, so compare the cost of one finished clip of the same model.

What does the Kinetix deal mean for Runway users?

Runway's Kinetix deal brought a Paris team working on 3D human motion into its robotics research on September 8, 2026; Runway's announcement mentions no change to its creative plans. Dealroom describes it as Runway's first European acquisition, of a 10-person company.

Why

Runway calls itself a world model company and is spending on robotics: it announced Praxis-1, an open-weight robot control model, on September 30, 2026.

What the public tests show

This review is built from what could be checked on November 3, 2026: Runway's pricing page, help center, terms, privacy and usage policies, API documentation, changelog and company news; Artificial Analysis's video leaderboards; a public test of Aleph 2.0 by the Creative AI Show on YouTube; reporting by PYMNTS, Dealroom, 404 Media and Engadget; Sacra's estimates; the App Store, including Apple's feed of recent reviews, and Google Play; and rivals' own pricing pages. Runway's claims about itself are labelled as its own.

What Runway is

Runway is a web studio for generating and editing video, images and audio, a developer API, and a research lab that now calls itself a world model company. All three belong to Runway AI, Inc. of New York, founded in 2018 according to Dealroom and Crypto Briefing. Runway says more than 60 million creators use it.

For most buyers the product is the web app at app.runwayml.com, with iOS and Android apps and panels for Premiere Pro, After Effects and DaVinci Resolve. Runway's own models sit beside other labs' models on one credit balance:

What changed in 2026

For buyers the biggest change is the end of Unlimited. Runway stopped selling its Unlimited plan on June 1, 2026, replaced it with Max, and is ending the remaining Unlimited subscriptions on November 30, 2026 (help center).

The product also turned from a model maker into a platform for many labs' models:

  • May: Runway Agent (May 13) and Aleph 2.0 with Edit Studio (May 21); Agent 2.0 for marketers followed on June 25.
  • August: Seedance 2.5 at 1080p (August 15), Ruby for SDR-to-HDR conversion (August 20) and Wan 3.0 (August 24).
  • September: the Team plan (September 4), Adobe plugins (September 8), a DaVinci Resolve plugin (September 23), and unified enterprise credits across the web app and API (September 18).
  • October: Runway on Claude Marketplace for enterprises (October 20), App Studio (October 26) and Runway Ads on every paid plan (October 27); Kling 4.0 at 25% off through November 30.

The company itself is moving toward robotics. It raised US$315 million in a Series E led by General Atlantic on February 10, 2026; Sacra and Implicator.ai, citing Bloomberg, put the valuation at US$5.3 billion. It opened offices in Tokyo (May 14, an initial US$40 million), London as its European headquarters (June 1, US$100 million over 18 months) and Paris (July 6, US$30 million). On September 8 the team of Kinetix, a Paris lab working on 3D human motion, joined Runway's robotics research; Dealroom calls it Runway's first European acquisition, of a 10-person company. The same day co-CEO Anastasis Germanidis said annual recurring revenue had doubled since April to US$200 million (PYMNTS); Sacra estimates US$200 million in August, up from US$96 million at the end of 2025. On September 30 Runway announced Praxis-1, an open-weight robot control model.

For a video buyer the catch is that Gen-4.5, Runway's flagship generator, dates from December 1, 2025, and Runway's research page lists no successor. Most new video capability on Runway in 2026 came from models other labs make.

Source: Runway's pricing page and the Free plan help page. A Standard credit costs 2.4 US cents and a Max credit 1 cent, so a 5-second Gen-4.5 clip (60 credits) costs about US$1.44 on monthly Standard and US$0.60 on Max. Extra credits cost 1 cent each with a minimum of 1,000, never expire, and are sold only on paid plans.

Other models cost more per clip. On the pricing page an Aleph 2.0 edit is 140 credits per 5 seconds, Kling 4.0 at 1080p 118 credits per 5 seconds (89 until November 30), and Seedance 2.0 Pro at 1080p 160 credits per 4 seconds. Standard's 625 credits therefore buy ten 5-second Gen-4.5 clips, four Aleph 2.0 edits or five Kling 4.0 clips at list price.

Two billing rules catch people out. Models with an Auto duration, such as Seedance 2.5, first take the most the clip could cost and refund the rest when it finishes; at 1080p Seedance 2.5 costs 68 credits a second (help center). And credits are spent whenever a generation finishes, whatever it looks like: Runway returns them only when a generation ends in an error, and refunds a plan only within 30 days if it is unused or close to unused (refund policy).

What happens to Unlimited

Unlimited cost US$95 a month and paired 2,250 credits with Explore Mode, which generated without limit at a relaxed rate: jobs could wait at busy times, only a few ran at once, and Veo 3 and 3.1 always needed credits (legacy plan page). Runway says those relaxed speeds caused queues and moved to a credit model.

Max replaces it at the same price with 9,500 credits a month, four times Unlimited's allowance, one month of rollover and no Explore Mode. On November 30, 2026 monthly Unlimited subscribers move to Max automatically unless they cancel; annual subscribers can cancel for a refund of their remaining months or accept a credit bonus. At 9,500 credits Max covers about 158 five-second Gen-4.5 clips a month.

A separate Unlimited Mode still exists, but narrowly: on Pro and Max, only for models that show the switch, with longer waits and fewer jobs at once, and Runway says the models vary with promotions and plan type (help center, November 1, 2026). PricingSaaS logged one such offer, unlimited Wan 3.0 on Max, which ended on October 18. Anyone who relied on unlimited relaxed generation has no equivalent on Runway's price list after November 30.

Source: Runway's API pricing. For Seedance 2.5 at 1080p Runway was the cheapest of the three hosts checked. The API adds a Model Router that picks a model by cost, speed or quality, published Workflows from the web app, and recipes such as a product ad from 200 credits for 4 seconds at 720p. Gen-4.5 through the API accepts prompts of up to 1,000 characters, 2 to 10 seconds and 720p only, and output links expire within 24 to 48 hours. For self-serve accounts, web-app credits and API credits are separate pools.

Where Gen-4.5 and Aleph 2.0 rank

Runway launched Gen-4.5 as first on Artificial Analysis's text-to-video board with 1,247 Elo as of November 30, 2025 (Runway). The board has since been re-anchored, with Kling 3.0 (Pro) fixed at 1000, and on November 3, 2026 Runway's models stood here:

Sources: text to video, image to video and video editing. Gen-4.5 is absent from the with-audio boards because it makes no sound, and Artificial Analysis notes it was judged on only the 61% of prompts that fit Runway's 1,000-character limit. Kling 4.0 was not on the boards yet, and OpenAI removed Sora 2 from its API on September 24, 2026 (OpenAI). Several models Runway hosts, among them Wan 3.0, MiniMax H3 and Seedance 2.5, sit near the top of these boards.

What public tests show

Outside evidence on Runway's own models is thin:

  • Creative AI Show, May 22, 2026. The YouTube hosts used Aleph 2.0 on existing clips the day after launch (video). They found the workflow clunkier than expected, because Aleph 2.0 relies on editing a start frame and generating a new video from it.
  • No Film School presented Gen-4.5 at launch as a model "that you didn't ask for" and judged the progress over Gen-4 modest to the naked eye (No Film School).

No published same-prompt test of Gen-4.5 against Kling 4.0 or Seedance 2.5 was found. The blind arena votes above are the largest public evidence, and they favour the models Runway hosts over its own.

What users report

The phone apps rate well overall: 4.5 from 19,253 ratings on the US App Store and 4.4 from 11.3K reviews on Google Play. Recent reviews are far harsher. In Apple's feed of the 50 most recent US reviews, written between October 22 and November 1, 2026, 37 gave one star and 8 gave five. The complaints repeat: credits used up on clips that ignored the request or added things nobody asked for, more credits needed to fix the model's own mistakes, a subscription that then asks for credit top-ups, and videos flagged by moderation. The five-star reviews praise the quality and the time saved, and two of them also call it pricey.

Runway's status page shows the cost of hosting other labs' models: in the last three months it logged failing or delayed Kling generations on November 2, elevated Seedance moderation errors on October 6 and Seedance safety false positives on August 19. Moderation itself cannot be switched off or relaxed by support for any account or topic.

Privacy, training and content rules

  • Training: section 4.4 of the terms updated October 23, 2026 says inputs and outputs may be used to train Runway's models and grants Runway a perpetual, irrevocable license to do so. Runway's terms and help center, checked November 3, 2026, describe no way for self-serve plans (Free, Standard, Pro, Max and Team) to opt out of training.
  • Enterprise: the plan that does get a commitment. Runway's August 20, 2026 enterprise post promises Enterprise customers no training on their data, and Runway lists uncapped IP indemnification, zero-data-retention support and contracts that bar third-party model providers from training on their content; its providers for Kling and Seedance say they do not process that data in China (enterprise FAQ).
  • Security: SOC 2 Type II and ISO/IEC 27001, with model training systems kept separate from customer content storage, per its data security page.
  • Ownership: Runway claims no ownership of your outputs and allows commercial use without credit; Free plan videos carry a watermark.
  • Content: the usage policy of March 6, 2026 bans adult nudity and sexual content, using someone's image, video or voice without permission, imitating a known living artist's style and impersonation; automated systems and human reviewers check inputs and outputs.
  • Personal data: the privacy policy effective October 23, 2026 lists vendors such as Amazon Web Services and says sharing with advertising partners may count as a sale under some US state laws, which you can opt out of.
  • Disputes: binding arbitration under New York law, unless you opt out.

Runway's own training data has been questioned. In July 2024 404 Media reported, from a leaked spreadsheet, that Runway gathered videos from thousands of YouTube channels and pirated films to train Gen-3; Engadget repeated the report and said Runway did not respond. Runway is also a defendant in Andersen v. Stability AI, an artists' copyright case in which a court let the core claims proceed in August 2024; the summary judgment hearing has moved to February 17, 2027 (ChatGPT Is Eating the World).

Who should not use Runway

  • People who want unlimited generation: the last Unlimited plans end on November 30, 2026, and Max is a fixed credit allowance.
  • Anyone who expects money back for clips that came out wrong: finished generations are charged, and refunds are only for unused plans.
  • Teams whose footage must never train a model but cannot buy Enterprise: the standard terms allow it.
  • Buyers who want the best text-to-video model for the price from Runway itself: Gen-4.5 is 720p, silent and 28th on the silent board.
  • People who mostly use one hosted model, such as Kling 4.0: the maker's own app or a cheaper host may cost less per clip.

Runway is the stronger choice when you edit existing footage, need ProRes or HDR files, or want one bill for several labs' models with an API on top. It is the weaker one when you only need cheap clips from a single model, or when price per finished second matters more than tools. Credits are not comparable across sites, so run one prompt on two of them and compare the cost of the clip you keep.

    Kling 4.0

Kling 4.0 is Kuaishou's video model for clips of up to 30 seconds with stereo sound in one generation, fully released on Kling AI on October 15, 2026. Public tests credit its long takes, camera moves and lip sync; it is slow, adds details nobody asked for, garbles on-screen text and has no public leaderboard score yet.
